Whether you are pregnant and want to avoid exposure to chemicals or just want to eliminate toxins in a variety of products in your life, nail polish is an easy place to start. Who doesn’t love their manis and pedis, but it is best to stay away from the ‘toxic trio’ the next time you pick a color for your polish. Yet, you don’t have to sacrifice vibrant colors, long wearing hues, or red carpet elegance. Here are five nail polish brands that don’t have the common toxins:

Toxic Trio

The toxic trio of chemicals that you want to avoid in nail polish is Formaldehyde, Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and Toluene. Formaldehyde is considered a human carcinogen (similar to tobacco) by The National Cancer Institute. DBP is a reproductive and developmental toxicant that the European Union has actually banned in any cosmetics and personal care products. Lastly, Toluene (sometimes listed as toluol or phenylmethane) is the same solvent found in the gasoline you put in your car. (Can you imagine putting that on your nails?)

Toxic Free Nail Polish Brands

There are many high end toxic free nail polish brands that are beautiful. You don’t have to sacrifice a luxe look! Plus, you don’t have to search high and low for them either on some obscure website. They are found on sites like Amazon.com, Beauty.com or Sephora.com. So the next time you give yourself an at-home mani, or get an in-spa pedi, pick one of these toxic free nail polish brands! Happily, more and more brands are free of the top three toxins (and even four or five, including formaldehyde resin and camphor!)

*Note: please do your research on each brand. Formulas are always changing. There are also other ingredients that may be allergenic or harmful so review before using. Any toxic free claims are made by the manufacturer and any reliance should be directed at the manufacturer, company, or brand.
