It is amazing how easy it is to make your own lip balm. I’m surprised more people don’t do it at home. You know what the ingredients are and they make such lovely little gifts! So here is how you can make your own homemade lip balm. (Note the post does have affiliate links.)
First, make sure you have a double boiler and cheese grater that you can dedicate to this project. You should also get bamboo skewers and plastic medicine droppers just for this too. You’ll use a bamboo skewer to stir and then throw away, and the medicine dropper to fill the containers and then throw away.
You can find the pan and cheese grater in second hand stores, but you can find all of the supplies for pretty cheap on (affiliate) Amazon; a grater for around $15, 300 skewers for $5, a double boiler for $20, and a dropper for $2.
Now you are ready to go! These are two of my favorite homemade lip balm recipes. One is a tint and the other is tingly!
Recipe One: Tinted Lip Balm
- 1 Cup of Grated Beeswax
- 1 Tablespoon of Coconut Oil
- 2 Teaspoons of Sweet Almond Oil
- Lipstick of choice in amount of choice. The more you use, the ‘stronger’ the color. This is a great way to use up the last bits of your lipstick tubes or get an extra tube of your favorite lipstick and use it to create a lighter, gloss version!
Recipe Two: Coconut Oil Lip Balm
- 1 cup grated beeswax (you can use a cheese grater or a knife, but be careful!)
- 3 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tsp vitamin E oil
- 2-3 drops tea tree oil or peppermint oil
Grate the amount of beeswax you need for the recipe. Then boil water in the double boiler. Once boiling, add the beeswax to the top container (the water underneath will melt the beeswax.) Melt all the ingredients together until it liquefies and there are no more visible beeswax flakes. Then immediately remove it from the heat. Use a bamboo skewer or other throw way tool, to stir it.
The add the essential oils (and lipstick) per the recipe. Using the bamboo skewer to mix. Then use the medicine dropper to ‘suck up’ some of the liquid, and then squeeze into your container. Repeat until the container and/or all the containers are full.
Then let the container sit at room temperature over night (or put them in the fridge for a couple of hours to harden them up faster.)
One thing to note, the more beeswax you put into the recipe, the more ‘firm’ the balm will be. It will have more the consistency of a balm stick vs. a balm gloss. Similarly, with the oils. The more oils will make it more glossy and more essential oils will make the fragrance stronger. Have fun experimenting!
