Current Interior Decorating Ideas for Your Home

With our new house underway, decorating has become a new hobby! As we have progressed on our house, we have learned about several current interior decorating ideas for our home. Working with many interior designers, tile specialists, home stores and contractors, there are key trends that are popular for home decorating right now. Especially if you are in a house building process.

However, if you grew up in the 70s and 80s, you’ll notice that these trends are not new but full circle in design.

Floral Patterns

Whether in a bedding duvet or drapes, floral is the new trend in home decorating. It is the one trend that I was hesitant to embrace though. If you grew up in the 70s and early 80s, you probably had it in your home too (or had the hand-me down floral couch!) Take on the floral pattern trend now by going bolder or smaller in the print. If you have past memories of old floral, stay away from the pea green, yellow, brown colors and go with bold reds, blues and oranges. A simple way to add floral is an accent wall of floral wallpaper or on pillows placed on top of a bed or sofa.

Brass Decor

Instead of chrome or stainless steel, pick out pieces that are brass in tone. However, you may be hesitant to bring in brass if you remember those brass fixtures in the 1980s bathrooms. If that is the case, just add a coffee table or end table with brass legs, or maybe cabinet knobs in a bathroom for a pop. Aim for a more modern design to make sure you don’t have any 80s flashbacks.

Four Poster Beds

When you think of four poster beds, you think of grand homes in the past or whimsical victorian bedrooms. They are coming back as style of furniture that invokes serenity and sophistication. If you are redecorating a bedroom, consider this as a piece and focal point in a bedroom.

Rich Colors

Think sapphire blues, emerald greens, vibrant oranges or cherry apple reds. Instead of the gray or beige sofa, go with a bold blue like the one in the image from West Elm. (I’m hoping to have it in my office this year!) If you don’t want to commit to such a large piece, consider an ottoman, pillow or an accent rug.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is back and a great way to add pizazz. Instead of wallpapering a whole room like your bedroom in the 1980s, pick a focal wall instead. Alternatively, place wallpaper on the back of a bookshelf or behind a glass cabinet.

If you are redecorating your whole house, just want to update one room or are building a new home, these are five ideas to make your space fun, fabulous and on trend.
