After being a part of a paid campaign about Healthy Babies, I wanted to get back to my roots with natural cleaning solutions. Part of that is natural ways to make my house smell good too. I’ve found that you need three things to do that: baking soda, white vinegar and essential oils. Stock up and here are eight simple, and natural ways to make your home smell good.

 home smell good

1. Carpet. Sprinkle Baking Soda on the Carpet. Allow to sit for a few minutes, then vacuum. It will absorb the odors in the carpet and leave your home fresh smelling.

2. Refrigerator. Add Baking Soda to the Fridge. Place a container of Baking Soda, slightly opened in the fridge to absorb odor.

3. Sink. Use Baking Soda and White Vinegar in the Sink. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of baking soda in a garbage disposal, and then add 1/4 distilled white vinegar. It will foam and clean your disposal, and eliminate any odors. You can do this for any drain in your house too! Another idea is to put a couple of slices of lemon or orange in the disposal, and turn it on. The disposal will smell citrusy!

4. Countertops and Floors. Use distilled white vinegar as a natural cleaning solution. (I’ve been doing this for years.) Take 1 part vinegar to 3 part water, and place in a spray bottle. Use to clean everything from counter tops to floors.

5. Dryer. Use a Natural Dryer Ball in the Dryer. You can find tons on these on Etsy. Sprinkle some drops of essential oil on it and toss it in the dryer. A natural way to freshen clothes and fragrance the air.

6. Drawers. Freshen Your Drawers by taking a cotton ball and sprinkle it with essential oils. Place in a small ziploc bag with little holes punched in it. Toss in a PJ drawer, lingerie drawer, sweater drawer, etc.

7. A Room. A great natural room spray is taking a cup of distilled water and adding about 15 drops of essential oil. Shake to mix and place in a spray bottle that has a mist function. Then spray the air, spray the fabric couch, etc.

8. The House. When you want to freshen your whole house, just open a few windows and doors for a cross-breeze. Or put some cinnamon sticks or clove buds in a pot of boiling water on the stove.

I follow pretty much all the tips you have posted above and have for years. not only are the tips healthier for you but also easier on the budget than buying commercial products. I would like to get the woolzies dryer balls rather than using dryer sheets. That’s on my to do list.

  2. Love these tips – I like the distilled water and essential oils spray – off to concoct that now! To clean microwave and make house smell great – take a microwave safe bowl (I use a large Pyrex measuring cup, add 1/2 a lemon, cinnamon sticks, cloves and a 1/4 cup of water for 5-7 minutes. It smells great and then you wipe the microwave clean.

Love that! I’ll have to try it. Sounds great on top of the stove too! Right now, I put 1/2 cup of distilled vinegar in the microwave, microwave for one minute. Cleans and freshens. I also do that in the dishwasher. A cup of vinegar. Run the dishwasher without anything else in it and presto, clean and freshened dishwasher!

  4. I didn’t know about the vinegar in the dishwasher trick – thanks – that will be part of my cleaning routine now!

  5. Hi Charlene! Love your blog! I like that you have included essential oils. My favorite is tea tree oil and a bottle of water. It smells great and it helped me with a ventiallation mold problem a few months ago. Also I like grapefruit seed extract. And I like that you’ve mentioned vinegar because it’s so popular in the kitchen cabinets 🙂

    Thanks for writing this!

    Toney.
