Drool Baby Expo by Magic Beans

The Drool Baby Expo

I am really excited about sharing this post again because, well, it is about a super-awesome high-end baby expo here in Boston.

Not New York. Not LA. Here…in Beantown.

Aren’t you now excited too?

This extraordinary expo called Drool (awesomely clever name) is the brainchild of the locally amazing Magic Beans, in collaboration with Big City Moms. They wanted to create a baby expo to connect expecting and new Moms with the hottest brands. All in one space.

See the best new strollers, car seats, baby carriers, accessories, and safety items, and learn about cord blood banking, photographers, 3D ultrasound and more. Explore new products, win incredible prizes, and walk away with an amazing gift bag. Complimentary light refreshments, mini-pampering sessions, and drinks will be served. Plus, many of the brands will have show-only discounts to get you started on your nursery or add to your new baby stash of items.

Check out this YouTube video from last year to see the fabulousness in store for this year!

And it is not just for parents-to-be or new parents; grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends who are looking for the best products for babies should definitely go too.

So the details: Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at the The Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts (in Boston’s trendy South End) from 5:00pm-9pm. Valet Parking is $15, but there are facilities and street parking in the area. Tickets cost $35 per person with an amazing swag bag worth double the ticket price. For $20, you can get a basic ticket (but no swag bag though), but you get access to all the fun, show giveaways and discounts.

There is a ton of parking in the area and is right on several subway lines. So order your tickets soon before they’re gone! But (drum roll please), I am giving away a VIP ticket! (Thanks to Magic Beans!) So use the form to enter and don’t miss out on the awesomeness! Personally, as an expectant Mom, I can’t wait!

Tiny Love

I love Tiny Love – a baby gear company that gets Mom-hood, and I am so excited they participated in our Gender Reveal Twitter party.

I first learned about Tiny Love, like most of us Moms, when I had my first child. The very first thing that we bought was Follow Me Fred; before we bought a crib, clothes and the myriad of other things you need for a new baby, this was the first thing we brought home. (I’m still really sentimental about it.)

Then I bought an Tiny Love activity mat (Gymini Monkey Island) that the was the best thing for the first year of his life. I still have it.

See?

But in the 3 years since I first discovered Tiny Love, they have totally taken their products to the next level. How? Because they listened to Moms like us to make the gear even more splendicious. These are things that new Moms don’t think of. But once you’ve “been there, done that”, you know how the littlest features can actually make your life so much better.

I got a first hand look at their line when I was at Toy Fair 2012. Their new bouncer, the Princess Gymini Bouncer (as well as the gender neutral version), took into the account the biggest complaint Moms’ had about bouncers: you have to angle your baby in order to get them in and out of the bouncer because of the crossbar. But Tiny Love made two side bars that are adjustable. So you can bring them in for baby to play or push them out to get the baby out. Plus, the hanging toys can slide up and down the bars as the baby gets older. No baby frustration! (And as a result, no Mom meltdowns.)

The activity mat is similar. The cross bars are adjustable so you can lower them down (without having to dislodge them) to get baby in and out. You can leave it lower for newborns to reach or raise it higher as baby grows. The mat itself is extra cushy compared to other activity mats and it is easy to take off the bars, roll it up and bring it to grandma and grandpa’s house.

Tiny Love also has stroller toys, soothers, activity toys and mobiles with special touches that make the function, as well as the form, superior to similar products on the market. Like this musical take along mobile (I’ve got to get this). You can easily attach it to a crib, a stroller, a play yard, a bouncer, a car seat (when the car seat is not in the car) – one product that you can use in 5 different ways. (Genius.) During the Gender Reveal Twitter Party we gave away a Tiny Love Soothe ‘n Groove Mobile. Perfect for a variety of cribs, but later (with its built in handle) it’s fabulous for your toddler to carry around and play with. (So smart to have a product that can grow with your child!)

So if you are going to a baby shower or having a baby yourself (even if it’s your second or third!) then check out Tiny Love. Magic Beans carries most of the line, as well as other online retailers!

Really.

What is a Gender Reveal Party

Gender Reveal Party

With over 60% of pregnant women finding out the gender of their baby during the course of their pregnancies, Gender Reveal Parties and Gender Reveal Baby Showers are growing in popularity. It is especially popular for second time pregnant Moms looking for a unique way to celebrate the birth of other children. Since many second time Moms don’t get a baby shower for subsequent children (for obvious reasons), having a Gender Reveal party is way unique way to celebrate the joy of a new life.

Despite waiting to find out the gender of our first child, we wanted to know earlier with this baby and decided to have a Gender Reveal Party. Between space planning and other factors, including a health scare, we thought that it would be fun to find out in advance of the birth of this child. Yet, I wasn’t too excited with finding out in a doctor’s office, so this was a fun option I discovered.

The concept is that you have an ultrasound (usually standard procedure during the course of pre-natal care) and during that appointment the technician doing the procedure usually can tell the sex of the baby. However, instead of telling you, they write it on a piece of paper and seal it in an envelope. You bring the envelope to a bakery who then bakes a cake (cupcakes or even cake pops) with either pink or blue cake/frosting on the inside. You have a party, cut the cake and voila – you find out what you are having! Another idea is to give the envelope to a friend who buys either pink or blue helium-filled balloons and places them in a large box. Then you open the box and see what floats out!

We also thought it may be good opportunity to support a local charity. In lieu of gifts, we are encouraging our guests to bring a pack of diapers to donate to charity. Anyone who brings a pack, will enter to win a fabulous prize. We also suggested folks bring something pink or blue depending on what is their guess for the gender of this baby; if we find out the gender is a boy, we are going to donate all the pink items to charity or vice versa.

In reality though, as a Blogger, I live my life online. I talk about my pregnancy, my family and my dogs on this blog, on Facebook and on Twitter, to name a few social media spaces! So it seemed to be a natural flow to share this experience with my online family too. (That’s you!) So on the night of our own Gender Reveal Party, I’m also going to be sharing the festivities on Twitter, Facebook and this blog. The really cool thing is that anyone who follows the fun will be the ones to get all the presents! So click here if you would like to learn more! Trust me, you are not going to want to miss this!

For all of you who are pregnant – whether you are team green, blue or pink – may you all have happy, and healthy pregnancies!

Magic Shopping at Magic Beans

If you have been to a Magic Beans store recently, you may have seen signs about its one-of-a-kind shopping application. Until recently, I would see the advertisement and promptly forget about it until the next time I saw the sign, and so on.

However, I was invited to an event to learn more about the Magic Beans smartphone app. We got to chat with the owner of Magic Beans and the app’s developer AisleBuyer. Then we got to spend $50 Magic Bucks as we tried it out.

I promptly kicked myself for not learning about it sooner.

I am a huge fan of self-service shopping and checkouts at retailers like Stop & Shop, BJs and CVS. I always choose that option or that line. It makes the shopping experience super fast and fabulously efficient. Other times, I look like crap or I’m in a crappy mood and just want to get in and get out without having to interact with anyone. Throw in a screaming baby, or a toddler in a tantrum, and self-service shopping/check-out goes from ‘awesome’ to ‘absolutely necessary’.

But this is how the Magic Beans app works:

First, you need to have an iPhone or Andriod phone (though more options are in the works). The application was designed and developed by a local Boston-based company called AisleBuyer, and mark my words, they are posed to hit the shopping world by storm. This Magic Beans app is the first in the nation, but I am sure that we will be seeing more in the months ahead.

The second thing is to download the app. Once it is downloaded, it will ask you two things: whether or not you want to receive push notifications, and if the app can use your location.

The push notifications aren’t necessary, so you can say no, but if you say yes, you can get notices when there is a special promotion going on in Magic Beans stores, or targeted discounts on things you might be interested in. Say you’ve purchased 4 of the 5 parts of the Star Wars Lego set…the next time you’re in the store, you may get a 25% of coupon for the 5th set. Cool.

The use of your location is necessary though. Otherwise, the application doesn’t know you are in a Magic Beans store and won’t work otherwise.

After that, you create a username and password, and then enter your payment information, like a credit card number and your billing address. This information is saved in a “cloud”. What that means is that even if someone takes your phone, there’s no way they can pull the information from it. A lot of people get freaked out by shopping on a phone, but the payment system utilizes a 128-bit encryption, so it’s every bit as safe as online banking.

So, the first time you use the app (assuming you haven’t downloaded and set it up before coming to Magic Beans) it does take a little extra time (maybe 1-2 minutes) to set up your information. But it is a one time deal, so when you come back to Magic Beans again and use the mobile check-out, it will be a lot faster.

Now that you have done the above steps, you’re ready to shop.

All you do is walk around Magic Beans and scan barcodes using the camera on your phone. The app is directly linked to the Magic Beans computer system, so you have access to all of the product information that they have, such as reviews, specifications, special deals, as well as the price. It is like you are shopping online, but in person. (Plus, it alerts a Magic Beans’ employee that someone is electronically shopping. So if there is any willy-nilly going on, they can get the 411.)

Finally, when you’re ready to check-out, you can do it from anywhere in the store. So if your toddler is about to have a meltdown, you are not having to stand in line too. On your phone, you just go to your cart, review your purchases, and click checkout. You then get a receipt on your phone, which is stored there – no paper involved – and you get a copy emailed to you as well. You also get a 6 digit confirmation code, which is shown to a a Magic Beans employee who verifies the purchase on their computer system (much like warehouse stores do when they check your receipt at the door).

From the time you’re ready to checkout, until the time you’re walking out the door, the checkout process usually takes 15-20 seconds, 30 seconds tops. Even if there is zero line, it’s STILL faster, because everything has already been scanned, all the discounts are applied, and all of your payment information is stored.

One example I got from a representative from AisleBuyer, was of a woman who had a downloaded the app and who had come to Magic Beans again because she had forgot to purchase an item on a previous trip. With a checkout line 6 people deep, she used the app. From the time she walked into the store until she walked out of the door, item in hand and paid for, it took 54 seconds and she saved $3 dollars.

Fabulous.

Generally, I like that there is no more watching for coupons or searching for discount codes. I also love you don’t have to deal with paper receipts either, and if for some reason you have to return an item, Magic Beans has the information electronically too. So no more searching for the receipt you shoved in a car console, a random pocket or at the bottom of a diaper bag. I also love that Magic Beans ‘gets it’. Parents are busier than ever and it is great that Magic Beans offers a unique way to help us get what need, quickly, but without sacrificing quality. (Now if I could only get the nearby Starbucks to have a drive-thru…) However, if you like shopping the old way, or not too keen on the technology, no worries. You can still check-out at the cash register, and chit chat with the awesome Magic Beans employees.

But…if you are now slightly intrigued by this app, the next time you shop at one of Magic Beans stores, check it out. If you are there between now and Christmas and you use the app to buy your items, you get the chance to “Spin the Magic Wheel” on your phone, and save $1, $3, or $5 off your purchase, or win everything in your cart for $0.99. Nice!

Anyway, I love the app. I think it is really neat, and the technology behind the application will soon change the way many of us will be shopping for a long time to come.

Isn’t that just Magic?

On the 11th Day of Charlene Chronicles…

Technically, I am getting out of writing the post for this, because Magic Beans has beat me to it. Then again, they should have because they are selling this totally cool toy.

I went to an event recently where I got a $50 Magic Ticket to spend on anything in Magic Beans. You would think that I would have blown through that in a matter of minutes…no…make that seconds. Totally fabulous toys like Playmobil, Legos and more. Yet, I stood there not sure what to buy my 13 month old. Would he like this? What about that? Could I see him playing with this? Is that better?

Yes, at a complete loss.

Along comes Sheri, the owner of Magic Beans. I felt like a teenager who is gaga over Justin Bieber. I probably, embarrassingly so, was giddy chatting with her. How often to you meet a woman who has built an award winning business with her husband?

Past the star struck look I had, she must have also seen panic in my eyes and steered me to a new product called Happyland Martian Moonhouse. It was high on the shelf and as she pulled it down, I could see my son playing with this unique toy. The colors, the coolness, the play factor, and the quality were all there.

I could go on and on about it, but like I said, Magic Beans rightfully beat me to it. So check out their blog, “Spilling the Beans” and read the fabulous review of the Happyland Martian Moonhouse.

Because if you have that panicked look in your eyes, this may be your ‘magic’ ticket too.

Nursing Trinket

Seeing that my chest was scratched by the little bitty nails of my nursing son, I needed to find something that could keep his wandering fingers occupied during our breastfeeding sessions.  So I recently picked up the Mooma Nursing Necklace at Magic Beans.

Created by a Magic Beans staffer, the Mooma Nursing Necklace just slips right on. The wooden ring is made from natural birch, and is a great size for baby fingers. It’s sanded super smooth, oiled with organic olive oil, and rubbed with beeswax before being attached to a brown adjustable organic cotton cord, which is also something babies can grasp..

As soon as I came home, I put it on before I fed my son.  While nursing, his hands immediately found it and his fingers have been playing with it ever since.  (Much to the relief of my skin!)  Since I leave it on all day, I find myself fiddling with it while on the phone, which is soothing.  I don’t remember to slip it on during the night feedings, but since we have a special blanket, my son strokes that for his nighttime nursing sessions instead. I have had it for four days and wish I had gotten it sooner.

The necklace retails for $14.95.  I feel it would be better priced at $9.99, but it is a nice product with quality materials.  You can pick one up at either of the four Magic Beans locations or online.  You can find it in the bottle/feeding section. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Penny Wise

When I saw today’s topic for the best of 2009 blog challenge, I really did not need to think about this one.  Anyone who has a baby knows where a “mom-to-be” spends most of her time…and most of her money.  I won’t even name names since I hold my head down in shame.
Yet where I spent most of my money wisely was a great store in the Massachusetts area called Magic Beans.  Magic Beans is a store that sells high quality toys for all age levels. All the toys are evaluated so every toy on the shelf is safe and inspires creative interactions. Magic Beans also sells baby gear like cribs, mattresses, baby carriers and car seats.  Regardless of what you are looking for, it is the ‘best of the best’ at each price point.
For me, that was the best part of being an first time expectant mom.  Knowing that when you walked through their doors, local parents had carefully selected what they were selling.  Even if a toy or baby item was recalled, the owners were on it.  It was a great feeling to know that Magic Beans has your back at every step of the parenting way.
Now as a new mom to a baby boy, anytime I need a new item on my “Mommy journey”, I immediately think of Magic Beans.  I will check to see if they carry the item and what they have to say about it.  Magic Beans has the best descriptions of items they sell.
For example – one of the first items I bought from Magic Beans was a Chicco Keyfit 30 Car Seat.  Here is the description of the car seat from a leading chain (please note that I am not endorsing the Chicco Keyfit 30):
“The Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat is designed for safety, comfort and convenience. With its removable newborn insert, the KeyFit 30 Car Seat accommodates babies from 4 to 30 pounds. The thickly cushioned seat includes a 5-point safety harness and is lined with energy-absorbing foam for increased safety and comfort. The base’s spring-assisted level foot, 2 precision bubble levels and Center-Pull LATCH adjustment allow quick and correct installation from either side of your vehicle and give you confidence that your child is safely secured in your vehicle.”
And here is the description of the same car seat from Magic Beans:
“Magic Beans is proud to carry the popular Chicco Keyfit 30 infant car seat. Like the name implies, the Keyfit holds infants up to 30 pounds or up to 33 inches in length. Since your petite passenger will be rear facing until he’s one year old and at least 20 pounds, the Chicco Keyfit is a smart investment. Best of all, it’s an amazingly light seat, weighing in at just 9 pounds.

With all the worries parenthood throws at you, don’t spend time fretting over the safety of the baby gear you depend on. The Chicco Keyfit’s energy-absorbing EPS foam liner offers additional side-impact protection. Apadded insert lines the car seat and supports an infant’s body and head. The 5-point harness is simple to adjust and easy to secure, and the base is complete with a bubble-style level guide on each side, making installation a cinch.

The Chicco Keyfit boasts a full, multi-position canopy to provide maximum protection from the elements. Parents will love the ergonomically designed handle that makes it more comfortable to carry your little bundle, whether it be from the car to the house, or toting him through the grocery store. The Chicco Keyfit car seat leads the pack as one of our favorites because it’s so user-friendly, safe, and long lasting.

Features and Benefits:
Accommodates kids weighing up to 30 pounds and 33 inches
5-point harness with one-pull adjustment
Compatible with Cortina and C1 strollers
Weighs about 9 pounds – Lightweight design
Centrally located tightening strap – Allows you to easily secure seat in place
Spring-loaded leveling foot
Liquid level indicators to insure correct installation and placement of base
Angled base fits into seat more securely, increasing safety
Full hood – Protects your child from the elements
Height adjustable platform
Soft infant insert for kids weighing 4 to 11 pounds – Keeps young babies supported
Sealed underside protects car seats and keeps debris out
Double bubble-level guides – Indicates proper position”

See what I mean?

Seriously, if you are in the area, stop by one of their four store locations. Don’t live near here? No worries, they have a great website. They also have free gift wrapping and free shipping on orders over $100 – at all times!! No gimmicks. Their customer service is top notch too- they even have a stroller quiz to help you find the stroller that is right for you.

Hands down, I am lucky to have heard about this store and to live close by. I am even more honored to have briefly met the owners along the way – real people. That is why Magic Beans is the place I wisely spent my money in 2009 and will be honored to do so in 2010 too!
