How to Give an Infant Massage

Giving your baby a massage has so many benefits, it is hard to know where to begin to share them all!

I learned about infant massage during a class at Isis Parenting when I had my first son, and we had a nightly ritual of a post-bath massage until he was 18 month old. We have even continued it to this day with a mini-back rub before he goes to sleep. I have now begun the same bonding ritual with my daughter and find it is the perfect time to connect with her after the end of a busy day. I think I am even more conscious of this daily activity since it is often hard to find one-on-one time with her; she needs to share my time and attention with her big brother!

Don’t despair if you have never done this before as it is never too late to start. But starting early and being consistent has many proven physical, mental and emotional benefits. It is more than a sense of touch and the act of cuddling. There are proven benefits with infant massage as a communication tool, and as a way to improve digestion, stimulate brain development, boost the immune system, and reduce stress. During those critical growth periods, like digestive maturing and teething, infant massage can lessen the stress. In fact, studies show that a five minute massage enhances the performance of babies and children on tasks that require attentiveness.

So what do you need to know to get started?

  • While there is no time you have to stop, you should start when your baby is at least three weeks old.
  • Don’t force the massage on your baby. Ask for permission using sign language or other cue.
  • Wait for the right time; quiet, alert, happy. This could be before or after a nap, after waking up in the morning or before going to sleep at night.
  • Don’t give a massage if your baby is sick, has a rash, just had some shots 48-72 hours prior, has eaten in the last 30 minutes, or is otherwise sad enough that the prospect of a pending massage does not lessen their crankiness.
  • Lower the lights and/or play soft soft music to provide a soothing atmosphere for your baby and you. Eliminate outside distractions, like your cell phone too.
  • Pick a lotion that is safe and beneficial to you and your baby.
Olive oil is a great massage oil. Seventh Generation has incorporated Olive Oil into their new line of baby products with bio-based ingredients. It is a great lotion to use for infant massage and it was fun to give a $50 basket of these products to Brook S.! Thanks to everyone who left a comment to enter the giveaway. SnoozeShade Review

Having a baby in the summer is going to be a new experience for me. My first was born in the late fall in New England, so it required blankets and long-sleeve sleepers, and resulted in very few walks.

I am expecting the exact opposite with this baby who is due any day now. (Update: she is here, and here are the details on her arrival.) So I have short-sleeve outfits, and I’m looking forward to starting my marathon training journey with walks in the early days of July. Yet, a concern I didn’t have to worry about early on, with baby number one, is sun exposure. Since you cannot use sunscreen on babies under six months old, you need other protection products. However, since it is warm, you need breathable options. Catch 22, right?

Well, I checked out a product called SnoozeShade when I was at a baby expo.

The snooze shade has an SPF rating of 50+ and is made of soft breathable fabric, so it keeps the interior of the stroller cooler on warm days. It reminds me a lot of the performance, wicking fabric in a lot of my workout gear. It also acts as a duel bug protector, and since it blocks out over 94% of light, the shade enables a baby to sleep in the stroller on a bright sunny day. Two other features that sold me were:

1. The fact it comes with a free mesh bag to store the shade so it makes it easier to having on hand in the diaper bag or in the storage compartment of your stroller.

2. It has an elastic grip with velcro ties so it won’t blow off on a windy day or collapse onto your baby.

The original shade fits most three-wheel and four-wheel strollers, but the SnoozeShade also has a shade for infant car seats and one for taller children. The price range is around $30-$50 depending on the version you receive.

New Infant Swaddling Recommendations

As a Mom that is about to have another baby, I’m already adding more swaddling blankets, like these from Aden and Anais, as well as swaddle sleepsacks, like this one from Halo, to my parenting stash.

Swaddling Options

Yet, new information has been released about swaddling that any parent – whether you are expecting your first child or fifth child – should know about, and it may affect what products you buy to swaddle your baby.

While traditional tight swaddling may provide a newborn infant with a feeling of warmth and security, studies have found that regularly wrapping a child, below the waist, too tightly in a blanket or cloth, may lead to an abnormal development of the hip joint.

As a result, there are new infant swaddling recommendations and new ways on how to swaddle a baby by the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) are now recommending a more contemporary form of swaddling call “Hip-Healthy Swadding”, where the infant’s arms and torso are snugly wrapped, but the legs are wrapped loosely, ensuring the legs are bent up and out. Thus, the legs should be free to move, and not be wrapped in a ‘straight down’ position.” This recommendation may seem familiar as there has been a similar discussion in the baby-carrier market during the past couple of years.

How to Swaddle a Baby

Here are the new recommended IHDI techniques for safely swaddling an infant in a square blanket:

Option 1: Fold one corner of a square blanket down and place the baby with its head in the center above the folded corner. Straighten the right arm and fold the right corner of the blanket over the baby between the left arm and under the left side. Then, tuck the left arm down and fold the left corner or twist the bottom of the blanket loosely and tuck it under one side of the baby.

Option 2: Place the baby’s head above the middle of one edge, tuck the right arm down and fold the right side of the blanket over the baby between the left arm and under the left side. Then, tuck the left arm down and fold the left edge of the blanket over the baby and under the right side. Fold or twist the bottom of the blanket up and loosely tuck it under one side of the baby.

If you need a visual, here is a video to show you how to do it.

Even if you swaddled the ‘old’ way for baby number one, just like the constant changes in crib recommendations, car seat safety and more, things can change from the birth of one child to another. So even if nothing happened to your previous child under the old recommendations or standards, it is still worth looking into this new technique.

The right products are also key to this new method of swaddling. A good swaddling wrap that is breathable, and has a bit of a stretch, is perfect for swaddling, such as those by Aden and Anais.  If you aren’t comfortable with swaddling yourself, a pre-formed swaddling product like the Sleepsack Swaddle by Halo, are a great must-have.

Thanks to these awesome companies, I have a Halo 100% Cotton Sleepsack Swaddle, and a single Aden and Anais swaddling muslin wrap, in your choice of color, to giveaway to one of you, so you can wrap your baby in one of these fantastic products in the safest swaddling method possible.

Quick Zip Sheet Review

Changing crib sheets can be such a pain! Especially when the mattress is on the lowest setting. Trying to reach in to get the mattress, taking the sheet off and then putting it back on, is a challenge. Then add the fact that us Moms often have to do all of this in the middle of the night if our baby spits up or our toddler pees through their diaper.

When, I was asked to try out a crib sheet system called the Quick Zip by Clouds and Stars, I jumped at the chance. Especially being seven months pregnant at the time of this review, I really need an easier sheet changing solution.

All you have to do is put on the one-time base (you may want to take it off every couple of months to give it a clean), and then anytime you want to change the crib sheet, you just zip off and on a new sheet top.

Here is a three minute video to show you how it works.

All in all, I really liked it. I wish the price point was a bit more affordable, but considering it is a lot less hassle than a standard sheet, I personally would spend a bit more to have a few in my nursery. This speaks from a Mom who has been changing crib sheets for 2.5 years now and is about to change a lot more.

The starter set (a base and one zip top) starts at $39.99 for the standard cotton. Then you will need a separate zip top, which at full retail starts at $21.99. In essence, for two sheet changes, it will cost $60 compared to other crib sheets that are about $30 for two pairs. Yet, these sheets are made in India out of a fine cotton blend, and you can mix and match. So you can put a pink zip top on a green base or put a blue flannel zip top for winter on top of a white organic cotton base. (If you look around the internet, you may find them at a lower cost.)

I would also consider purchasing the zip-able mattress pad if you want a mattress pad for your crib mattress. That way, it is easy to change both in the middle of the night! The mattress pad starts at $19.99.

While it is hard to see in the video, the zipper sits within a flap/pocket so it is safe for little hands and feet. The only issue to watch out for is that some toddlers, at some point, may figure out there is a zip and start unzipping the sheet topper. However, my toddler, and the young children of many of my friends, can’t zip up his own coat yet, so it’s really is a minor worry. At a minimum, you probably will have gotten a good 2 years out of the sheets before that would possibly happen. The regular crib sheets we have owned had a shorter life span because the elastic, that grips the mattress, stretched out and no longer gripped so we have had to replace them every 6 months. So these Quick Zips may be a greater start up investment, but you won’t have to buy as many sheets over time; with the old adage, you get what you pay for, kind of thing.

They come in standard colors like pink, blue, sage and white, and a couple of classy patterns, as well as different fabric options like organic, flannel and poly mink. In addition to the crib sheets, they also have pack-n-play zip sheets, and twin bed zip sheets (perfect for those potty training days and months!)

If you can swing it, I would get a starter set and try it out. Then I have a feeling you will be purchasing more. (Like I will be doing for baby number two.)

And congrats to the winner(s) of the prize pack!
