St. Patrick’s Day Activities for Kids

Whether you are Irish or not, whether you can spell claddagh or you can’t, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day can be fun, as well as good cultural exposure for your children.

If you have younger kids, here are some fun ways to spice up the day. You can do some or all, or pretend a Leprechaun visits during the night. Here is a good backstory:

Explain there are Irish elves called Leprechauns who love (chocolate) gold coins so much that if they don’t find them in the house on St. Patrick’s Day, they will get mad and leave things a mess. So you need to capture one!

Have the kids make a Leprechaun Trap to see if they can trap a Leprechaun. Here are a couple of ideas, but anything they can think up and imagine is always a great thing too. Just find empty coffee containers, empty cereal boxes, empty oatmeal jars or empty shoe boxes, construction paper, tape or glue, scissors, markers or crayons, stickers, etc. Then use items like fake gold (chocolate gold coins are good), lucky charms cereal or anything that would ‘lure the Leprechaun’ to the trap.

Set up the traps before the kids go to bed and while they are sleeping, leave evidence behind like green confetti, maybe muss up the house a bit (or more so than usual!) Open some kitchen drawers, and leave green napkins hanging out. Turn over a chair. Maybe even leave Leprechaun footprints. Color the toilet water green pretending it must be Leprechaun pee-pee. (Kids love that!) Then hide chocolate gold coins around the house. When the kids wake up, they will see the empty trap, but the fun ‘destruction’ (and chocolate) the Leprechauns left behind in their hasty escape!

Here are some other ‘Lucky 7″ activities to do on or before St. Patricks Day.

1. Serve green eggs for breakfast.

2. Pack a baggy of Lucky Charms cereal for the lunch box or as a fun snack.

3. Wear green of course!

4. Make a Leprechaun Hat.

5. Make rainbows of colored paper or draw them with colored markers or crayons. Or make shamrocks.

6. Play Irish Music in the house.

7. Make Irish Soda Bread or Irish cookies (flavored with mint as an extra touch!)

An as an FYI, leprechauns are not the only Irish elves…they have lesser-known cousins called Clurichauns that drink too much and will ruin your liquor cabinet if you get on their bad side! (But that is a post for another day.)

How to Make Snow Ice Cream

With snow finally falling here in the New England, it is time to pull out a fun winter tradition and make snow ice cream (even if it is March 1st).

I posted this in January last year when we were up to our highballs in snow (err…rather literally.) This time the pickings are slim, but gather what you can. It is a fun activity with the kids if they have a snow day or a fun afternoon after they get home from school.

For 8 servings, you need is 1 gallon of (clean) snow (about 16 cups), 1 cup of sugar (more or less to taste), 1 tablespoon of vanilla and 2 cups of milk. Put it in a large bowl. Mix it together until creamy. You can add flavors like peppermint oil or cocoa powder. Or you can add ingredients like M&Ms, crushed candy canes, or chocolate chips. Have fun with it!

Have the kids get the snow and add the ingredients, which are safe to handle. Have them play around with ingredients to see what unique flavor they can come up with. For older children, have them name their new snow cream flavor, and/or sketch a logo or design for their snow cream. For brave souls, set up a snow cream stand in lieu of a lemonade stand and see what happens.

Most of all, enjoy eating it!

Gift Ideas for Hard to Buy for People

Presents for IvySo are you getting stressed out yet about your holiday shopping? Especially shopping for the people on your list that you just don’t know what to get for them?

The best thing to think about for those hard-to-buy for people on your list is not to think about what object to get, but what service to get. In other words, think less about buying a wool sweater and more about getting a dry cleaning certificate. Don’t give just a restaurant gift certificate, but combine it with an offer to pay for a babysitter or be the babysitter yourself. Give a book of car washes or a car detail gift certificate. Offer to mow the lawn or shovel the walkway for the season. Or give a gift certificate to Peapod or other delivery service to give someone a grocery shopping break. My personal favorite gift is a spa gift certificate – what a better gift than one of pampering because, let’s face it, when do most of us take the time for some pampering.

Congratulations to Julie for winning the 3rd day of the Charlene Chronicles’ 12 Days of Holiday Giveaways: a $25 Spa Wish gift certificate good at hundreds of spas across the country.

Klout and Self-Hosted WordPress Blogs

Image representing Klout as depicted in CrunchBase

Klout Klash

As many of you know from my previous Klout post, there are new ways to give Klout. However, there are new ways to add Klout too, and that is by linking your various social media channels into your Klout profile, such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr, and more. There is even the ability to add your blog.

Um, maybe.

I have a self-hosted WordPress blog and I was super excited to see the WordPress emblem on my Klout profile. In addition to adding my YouTube channel and my LinkedIn profile, I went to add my WordPress blog.

Until I realized I couldn’t.

Apparently, if you have a self-hosted WordPress blog, you can’t add it to Klout. (Ironic that this post, on this blog, about Klout, won’t get me any Klout points). However, if you have a free WordPress blog (meaning you don’t have your own domain name like CharleneChronicles.com but rather CharleneChronicles.Wordpress.com) you can add it to your Klout profile.

Let’s just say that is not sitting well with many folks. Here is a stream I came across when looking for a solution.

Klout5

Apparently, there isn’t one.

Klout6

And the answer given by this particular employee is rather…non-helpful…don’t you think? Many people thought so. Here is one ‘customer’ response, if you will.

Klout3

Another commentator also thought that the reasoning (albiet a short one) from the Klout employee didn’t make sense.

Klout2

The Klout employee responded again.

Klout

Needless to say that second official Klout response didn’t go well. Here is one of the many responses.

Klout4

All in all, there are two issues here. First is the quick, non-specific, responses from Klout. Big no-no number one. The next is the issue is about self-hosted WordPress blogs not getting the same Klout push as WordPress hosted blogs. While I don’t agree with the whole “I’m better than thou…” comments, I do agree with the gentlemen above who said that until both sides (self-hosted and WordPress hosted) websites can be supported by Klout, Klout should have left all ‘blog platforms” off the list so there is an even playing field.

What do you think?

Exercising While Pregnant

Chicago Marathon

Image via Wikipedia

So there have been a lot of articles about the woman who ran the Chicago Marathon at 39 weeks pregnant and gave birth just hours later. Her doctors had given her the go ahead and the race officials did not ban her from running. So she did.

I love this story for many reasons, but mainly because it shows times are changing again for women and sports. Just 40 years ago, women were pulled off a marathon courses because marathons were only for men. It wasn’t until 1972, that women were allowed to run the Boston Marathon, for example.

I also love this story because it shows times are changing for women’s health. As soon as you got the official diagnosis that you were, indeed, preggo, the nurse or doctor told you to start ‘taking it easy’. In fact, when I became pregnant about three years ago, I was told to stop running immediately. I was just six weeks along and there was no medical reason to stop. I had just run a marathon 8 months prior too. But it was just the common pregnancy medical advisory.

Fast forward to today. Most doctors and nurses are changing their guidance and are encouraging women to stay active during their pregnancies. Science is showing the benefits of exercise on the fetus, and the fact that scientists are even studying exercise and pregnancy is a big win for women’s health.

Yet, it is important to remember that only one percent of the world population has run a marathon, and since many marathons are only certain times of year, to be able to find one on the race calendar when you are 39 weeks pregnant is the luck of the draw. But the essential point of the story is that this woman (Amber Miller) was able to run the Chicago Marathon because she had run marathons in the past. Which, basically, is the key point with regard to exercising when pregnant:

    1. Don’t start anything new. Don’t start running when pregnant if you have never run before. If you have run before, but no more than 5 miles, don’t start training for a marathon, etc.
    2. Listen to your doctors. While Amber completed the Chicago Marathon, she didn’t actually run the whole way. She ran half and walked half based on her doctor’s advice, which is also part of point number three.
    3. Watch your core temperature. The key to exercising while pregnant is to raise your heart rate to get the health benefits, but you have to be careful about increasing your core temperature, which can be harmful to a fetus. It is the same reason why you can’t take long hot showers while you are pregnant. So find activities that don’t elevate it too much, or balance such exercise with periods of rest, like Amber did with her run/walk schedule.
    4. Find safe exercise options. As your pregnancy progresses, your core shifts, which is why pregnant women become ‘off balance’ while walking. So make sure the exercises you pick don’t challenge that balance, which would increase your risk of falling. Stick with ‘straight-line’ exercises like walking (or running), swimming or the ellipitcal machine. Perhaps skip classes like step aerobics that require you to twist and spin (plus as you get bigger it gets harder to see the step!)
    5. Don’t forget strength. While aerobic exercises are important during pregnancy, so are strength exercises. So remember to incorporate some weights into your exercise schedule, but listen to your doctor about how much you can lift and stick to machines if you can, as they will make sure your posture is in line. This is key since pregnant women’s muscles ‘relax’ as a pregnancy progresses and there is an increased risk of a ‘pulled’ muscle if you don’t perform the exercise correctly.

All in all, exercise and pregnancy is showing to be a good thing. While many doctors’ wouldn’t advise many pregnant women to run a marathon, the fact that we can, and are not banned from doing so, is a wonderful advancement for women. The information gleaned from such pursuits could generate key data for health advancements. A win-win for all of us.

Charlene is a seven time marathon runner and a certified aerobics instructor. However, this post should not be construed as medical advice and you should talk to your doctor about any exercise program.

Smilebox Review

Image representing Smilebox as depicted in Cr...

Image via CrunchBase

The slogan for company Smilebox is “Create a Little Happiness”. A few years ago, when I got a Smilebox email from my Dad with pictures of him in Afghanistan, it was the way I could see him (before Skype became mainstream) in an element that an ordinary email attachment couldn’t do. Music, pictures that told a story, and more personal than an e-card.

Since then, the company has grown. More options, more choices and even a cool iPhone app where you can add characters, art and words to your ordinary pictures.

Smilebox Photo

But at the heart, it is still the same. The opportunity to take your photos, put them in a musical slide show to say Hello, Merry Christmas, or Happy Birthday. A way to share new baby photos or your vacation pictures set to music that captures the essence of your trip and your love for family. Or a unique way to invite people to a special event.

It is all free, but if you want an ad-free experience, you can sign up for a membership. You can also add Smilebox to your tool bar (Mac or PC) making it easy at anytime to create a scrapbook, make a slideshow, or send an email to the grandparents with the grandkids pictures from soccer practice that day. There are tons of designs, themes, music and picture possibilities, and if you install Smilebox, it even recognizes when you upload new photos to your computer and asks if you want to make a Smilebox creation from the new pix.

You can then share your creation directly from Smilebox: Email it, Burn it to DVD, Save it, Facebook it, or Tweet it. For bloggers, you can upload to WordPress or Blogger directly, which is an unique way to share a product review or blogging event.

To give you a real feel for Smilebox, here is a slideshow to show its slice of happiness. If only you knew how quickly it was to create. Thus, it is possible to create a Smilebox and wow the family before dinner with a toddler in tow.

Smilebox rocks, my friends.

Tips for Getting a Facial

Young women getting facial maskIf you are like me, you probably haven’t had a facial in a long time. I finally got one at a great place in Chestnut Hill, MA called MZ Skin Care. After my experience with the awesome Ultrasonic Facial there, I realized that there are some key factors to consider when deciding where to go and who to trust with your skin. So whether you live in Massachusetts or Minnesota, consider these following face tips (and check out my video on other spa etiquette considerations too!)

  • Go to a spa that has facialist with expertise in skin. If you have an esthetician that was giving a pedicure in the appointment slot before, they probably are not an expert. Find a person that only does facials because they will have seen all skin types, skin tones and skin issues, and can recommend the best facial for you based on your complextion, your lifestyle and skin goals.
  • Be prepared to have a facial switch-a-roo. In other words, you may have booked the Triple Exfoliation Double Sow Cow facial, but a good esthetician will look at your skin and ask you a couple of questions first. So if you booked the oily skin facial, and the esthetician is seeing your dry skin, they are going to do something different. Let them, but feel free to ask about the price differential and how it may or may not impact you.
  • A good esthetician will not try to sell you new products. They may state that you are using the wrong product (e.g. facial cleanser for dry skin when you have oily), but they should only be educating you and not selling you.
  • Don’t book a harsh or stimulating facial before a big event – like a wedding. You don’t know how your skin is going to react no matter how brilliant is the facialist. If you do want your skin to be in tip top shape for a special occasion, start going every 6 weeks about 6 months prior to the event, to ensure maximum impact.
  • Most runners know the best therapeutic massages are often not at a spa. They go to a massage specialist at a business that specializes in massages. The same could be said for facials. A business that only does facials means they have a focus and passion for skin care. By no means does that mean a typical spa doesn’t have facial rock stars, but it is something to consider. On the flip side though, you lose the flexibility of getting multiple services at once or having the ability to get a walk-in appointment.
  • It is a myth that you will always break out after a facial. It is possible as there are some facials that are stimulating and can pull out the pore gunk resulting in a lovely zit, but it is not always the case. Plus, the more consistently you go, the more your skin stays in shape and is used to the facial process.

All in all, there is nothing like a facial when your skin gets massaged & masked and you walk out with a glow. So take the time to go get one (especially during Spa Week), and if you live in Massachusetts, ask for Mara at MZ Skincare. She rocks.
