Summer Beauty Trends

Thanks to Walgreens for underwriting this post. I was paid as a member of the Clever Girls Collective, but the content is all mine. Visit http://www.discoverbeautywithin.com/.

It is hard to believe that summer is almost here, but this year I’m more acutely aware of the start of summer because that is when this baby bump of mine is set to make an appearance.

At this point in my pregnancy, I’m not feeling very glamorous, but despite my pregnancy shortcomings, I still follow the summer trends. While I don’t think, for example, that horizontal stripes are a good look for pregnant woman, it definitely rocks for everyone else.

So my focus is what I can do with makeup. I may be limited in wardrobe selection, but I can always be on trend by mirroring fashion must-haves with beauty basics, and so can you. Even if your budget doesn’t extend to new summer-must-haves in the clothing department, set aside some cash for some great finds at the local drugstore, like Walgreens, to spruce things up for summer. Are you more ‘au-natural’? Walgreens, for example, has organic and nature beauty products too.

Stripes: Like I mentioned above, stripes are big in fashion for summer. But a way to transition it is to think Nail Art. Add bold stripes to your mani or pedi. Or add layers of color for a rainbow effect. If you are concerned that horizontal stripes make you look fat, then no worries in sporting stripes on your fingers.

Nail Art

Neon and Brights: Whether in shoes, bags or accessories, I keep having flashbacks to the 80s, but the hot pink and bright yellows are summer-must-haves. Even if I wasn’t pregnant, I’m not sure I can pull off bright yellow in my clothing, but sporting it on my toes? Totally. So pick up a bottle, and start painting those piggies. Or pucker up and paint your lips a fabulous shade of hot pink.

Edit-Lorel Nail Polish Yellow - Tweet Me

Sun-kissed Glow: Let’s face it, this is a must-have look every summer. That tussled, I just-spent-a-day-at-the-beach-and-I-wasn’t-running-after-kids look. But being older means being wiser, right? So skip the sun and slather on sunscreen. Then fake the tan with some awesome bronzer on your cheekbones. Don’t forget about the rest of your body. Spray on SPF and if you want a little color, try tinted body lotions.

JergensNaturalGlowBodyMoisturizer

Tubular tresses: Anything goes, really, for your hair this summer, but the key is keeping it non-frizzy. Use products to fight the frizz or find cool bobby pins to make a bun from a breezy pony tail or pick out a cute hair accessory like a headband to add a pop of color or pattern (think bold or stripes to mirror the trends mentioned above.)

HerbalEssencesAnti-Frizz Conditioner

Lastly, my two other summer beauty must-haves are (1) waterproof mascara and (2) club soda. There is something about heat that makes mascara melt, so this is the one time a year to use it in place of your regular mascara. You can typically make the switch easily as most product lines also include a waterproof version. Oh, and what about the club soda? While it may be a great base for fabulous summer cocktails, it is a beauty essential. Take it from this former collegiate and masters synchronized swimmer, drenching your hair in club soda post-pool party can minimize chemical damage and keep your locks looking luxurious.

And if you do nothing else, at least pick up a bright shade of lipstick. There is nothing better than that to catapult you from winter to summer in a flash.

Edit-WetnWild Hot Paris Pink Lipstick

Whether you pick up yellow polish and hot pink lipstick, a striped headband, sunscreen and bronzer, or bobby pins and club soda, adding a couple of these easy-to-find and won’t-break-the-bank drugstore beauty items, can perk you up for summer. And trust me when I say I will be putting hot pink gloss on my lips and a cute headband in my more-than-likely unwashed hair to get me through my upcoming early newborn days; there is nothing better to help a postpartum Mom feel glam when she has fantastic lip color and a cute hair-do to feel put together (…..even if you’re really not.)

Fashion Forward Pregnancy at Mom 2.0

The recent chatter about the Mom 2.0 fashion scene really doesn’t apply to me this conference go-around.

Why? Because I’m 32 weeks pregnant.

At this point, my main goal is not fashion.

For anyone who’s been pregnant, you know wardrobe options are limited even on a good day at home. Add a beach-front White Party and exclusive Verace Mansion access and you may have the urge to go into labor.

Yet, if you’re willing to stand in a maternity bathing suit while a skinny 20-something spray tans you in a booth, here are some fabulous white dress options from Destination Maternity.

Motherhood Maternity Sleevless Maternity Dress $60

Motherhood Maternity Sleeveless Maternity Dress ($60)

Pea in the Pod White Maxi Dress

Pea in the Pod White Maxi Dress ($130)

Personally, if I put on a white maternity dress (not including my pasty post-winter skin), I’d look like I was walking down the aisle in a shot-gun wedding. So I’ll leave the white wonder to my fellow conference attendees.

I may be able to redeem myself at the Versace Party. Yet, since Versace doesn’t have a maternity line, I’ll have to find a suitable mainstream option without offending the fashion elite.

I personally love this maxi dress from Old Navy. It looks expensive but is only $40.

Add some chunky jewelry and cute shoes, and I may just make it past security.

At the conference itself, I’ll probably be wearing a white maternity blouse and black pants. Which, of course, will mean everyone will see the black full-panel-how-I-keep-my-maternity-pants-up fabric underneath the white (I hope it’s not stained) maternity blouse.

At this point in my pregnancy, I’m not buying anything else. And I don’t care. I’m just trying to keep up with my blog posts, my toddler and not fall flat on my face. (And maybe figure out how to squeeze myself into the airplane seat.)

Though I will spend most of the conference trying not to look like a pregnant cow.

Kid Jewelry Can Be Toxic

If you are a parent of a girl, you know that they love to play dress up and wear jewelry. However, if you shop at Target, Walmart or other low cost retailers, they may be wearing more than just jewelry & may be wearing toxic chemicals too.

Since we aren’t about to give our little girls diamonds and gold, we find low cost necklaces, rings and earrings for everyday wear. But despite a lot of oversight, there are still products that have dangerous levels of cadmium and lead.

According to the website HealthyStuff.org, over half (59%) of the products recently tested had a “high” levels of one or more hazardous chemicals. Four products, they found, contained over 10% cadmium, a known carcinogen. HealthyStuff.org also found that fifty percent contained lead, with over half containing more than 100 ppm of lead, exceeding the Consumer Product Safety Commission limit of lead in children’s products.

The product manufacturers stated that the risk presents itself if the child puts the product in its mouth. But since us Moms know that happens on a regular basis, there is definitely cause for concern.

Here is a video from HealthStuff.org with more information, but if possible, avoid metal based jewelry unless you know it is pure sterling silver or gold. Stick to plastic jewelry that is clearly labeled BPA-free and Phthalate-Free. Or find organic jewelry. Etsy is a great place to find unique (and safe) pieces for our little girls (and for us too!)

Pop of Pink this Spring

March is a tough time to know what to wear. Especially here in New England when you have no idea if it will be 30 degrees or 60 degrees outside. Add to the fact that you are probably sick of wearing neutrals all winter too.

The solution this spring is to think Pink. Bright pink. Bold pink. Hot pink. It keeps the deeper tones that are more suitable for winter, yet is a nod toward its pale pink summer sister.

Find a cardigan or a little blazer in that color and toss over those winter-weight black pants and shirt. Or find a pink skirt and pair with your current black tights and boots. You still keep warm on those colder days, yet the bold and vibrant spring-fling hue catapults you into the next soltice.

This vibrant pink hue is a perfect color for spring sweaters.

Some good buys and finds are:

Forever 21: Cherry Blazer $28

Old Navy: Raspberry Punch Cardigan $23

Gap: Neon Pink Sweater $45

Ann Taylor Loft: A-Line Guava Skirt $50

Gap: Fushia Skinny Jeans $70

JCrew: Neon Pink Blazer $175

Moms Fashion File

My fashion intervention

There are many fashion and style challenges for Moms. Here is a 4 minute video sharing my style snafus, and there are many of them. Shirts that are too short after a pregnancy? Check. Hats and sweatpants for school dropoff? Check. No clothes to wear to a casual coffee meet-up other than a cocktail dress and stripper heels? Check.

So what are your style dilemmas? Share them with me, as I am submitting this video to the Moms Fashion File in hopes that some secret Mom Style agents, otherwise known as the M.O.M squad, at BlogHer 11 will surround me and whisk me off to a Style Session (like you see in What Not To Wear episodes, minus the 2-week-really-embarassing-undercover video footage), where I can learn some tips that I can share with you.

(There is hope for us my friends. There is hope.)

MetrowestMamas and CharleneChronicles

After a post from a Facebook fan, I realized I better explain more about the resurgance of Metrowest Mamas. It has been on my list of things to write, but something has always popped in front.

For those of you who have been with me since the beginning, you first knew me as Metrowestmama on Twitter, on my Metrowestmama.Wordpress blog and the Metrowest Mamas Facebook page. However, when I decided to branch outside of just being a local mom blogger, I became Charlene Chronicles and many of you followed me over here, of which I am so grateful.

Fast forward to this past week when Metrowest Mamas came back.

I have been listening to many of you over the past 8 months. Some of you love Charlene Chronicles because it is everything you need; local events, local kids activities and other awesomeness. But some of you were getting a bit perturbed though, because you don’t live here in Massachusetts and weren’t interested in having your Facebook feeds listing local stuff. Then on yet another spectrum, some local Moms wanted a quick place to get links to activities and events and did not want to sift through other Charlene Chronicles posts.

It is such a hard balance.

So I decided, right or wrong, to try Metrowest Mamas on Facebook once again. This time, I am only listing local events and activities. Everything else will be on the Charlene Chronicles‘ Facebook page: videos, pictures, questions, posts and more. Some of you may end up liking both pages. Others one or the other.

On the website, there will be a Metrowest Mamas badge on the sidebar. So when you come to Charlene Chronicles and are just interested in local events, one click will take you to all the details. The main body of the blog will be general, generic goodness. However, I am going to start dedicating some of my posts to fashion and beauty, and I am going to be combining my fitness and health posts. So you will be seeing some icon changes over the next month or two. All in all, it should be some fun content.

Anyway, I hope it will please the majority of you and hopefully not too many will be upset with the changes. At this particular moment, it is how I think it would best work. However, I am always listening, so feel free to let me know what you think. Love it or hate it? The one great thing about Facebook and the Internet is nothing has to stay the same. But what will stay the same is my desire to bring you cool discoveries, funny posts, fun giveaways, and a passion and a sincerity for it all.

What do you think?

Spring and Summer Fashion Trends

For Beauty and Fashion Week here at CharleneChronicles, we have talked about beauty. Specifically, skin care and makeup routines. Now let’s talk fashion. What are the trends for spring? And how can we fit it into our wardrobe without breaking the bank?

I am a huge fan of Marshalls and T.J. Maxx, even since I was a kid. However, let’s just say that in high school, in the 80s, that was not the place to be seen. Fast forward 20+ years, and it is the place to get luxe labels, trendy tees, designer denim, hot handbags, sweet shoes and more. However, most people (I admit, even me a tiny bit) wondered if those tees, labels, denim and shoes may have been past season. As a result, I was invited to their spring launch where media and bloggers got to see some of the spring fashion trends, talk to representatives from Marshalls and TJMaxx, as well as nosh on some nibbles (bonus!).

____________________

I spent over an hour chatting with some great representatives from both Marshalls and T.J. Maxx. In the various conversations, many myths I had about these two companies were dispelled. Here are some of the insights I learned:

1. Marshalls and T.J. Maxx don’t carry the same merchandise. No two stores are ever the same — not even two T.J. Maxx stores. That’s what makes off-price shopping so much fun, and why so many customers shop both stores.

2. Marshalls and T.J. Maxx aren’t discount stores. They are off-price retailers who use their buying power to get great value on brand-name merchandise and pass those savings on to us. Less than five percent of the merchandise has unnoticeable irregularities and if irregular, it is clearly noted on the price tag.

3. Marshalls and T.J. Maxx is in-trend and in-season. They have their own company distribution centers so they can move merchandise through to the stores super fast. That way, they offer a continual flow of fresh merchandise; each store receives three to four shipments weekly, totaling more than 10,000 new items each week! So it is just a myth that the current Marshalls and T.J. Maxx just has leftover merchandise that department stores don’t want. Less than 15 percent of merchandise is non-trend driven or past season, and these items are clearly marked as “past-season” on the price tag.

4. Marshalls and T.J. Maxx also has merchandise that isn’t in department or specialty stores. That’s because off-price buyers travel the world to offer “treasures”, including gorgeous leather footwear from Italy; luxurious soaps from France; and fine crystal from Germany.

____________________

After I got the insight into the companies, it was time to talk fashion. I admit I am not a fashion guru by a long shot, so it was great to get the experts to share the latest looks. So, now that we all have an idea of wear to shop on a budget, let’s get fashionable. This is what you need to remember when hitting the stores this spring and summer: natural, nautical, floral, tribal and colorful. Easy to remember, right?

The segments above are inspiring, but what pieces should you be on the lookout to spice up your spring/summer wardrobe? Here is the low-down on what you should have in your closet this spring and summer for all of the Mommy life-adventures.

A Dress - Dresses continue to be popular, especially for the spring and summer temperatures.

Date Night: A little white dress with laser cut or lace accents paired with either bright or black accessories.

Playgroup: A solid colored maxi dress cinched at the waist with a color blocked belt in bright colors like teal and purple.

Working-Mom: A crochet dress in a saturated spice color, accessorized with tribal printed bangles and a leather and crochet clutch.

Versatile Tops - From tank tops to tunics, you can find one to fit the Mommy lifestyle, even if you are currently breastfeeding or chasing after a toddler (think bending over to pick the sippy cup off the floor and trying not to show the boobies).

Date Night: Silk tops with cut-outs, one shoulder and asymmetrical hemlines add interest to flowing pants in neutral hues.

Playgroup: A military-inspired shirt or vest with pocket detail and roll tabs paired with a feminine skirt or shorts.

Working-Mom:  Knit tops in blush tones with ruffle and lace detail.

Wide-Leg Denim - After so many seasons of the skinny fit, wide-leg denim is making a comeback. (My post-baby thighs and hips are so grateful for this fashion change!)

Date Night: Palazzo pants and tribal-printed halter top with strappy heels and lots of jewelry.

Playgroup: A pair of flared denim with a printed tee, belted military-style anorak and ‘flatform’ shoes – platforms without the wedge incline.

Working-Mom: Denim trousers with a cropped white sailor jacket and red wedge heels. Or a higher-waisted pair of jeans, striped top and a tucked-in oxford. Accessorize with a skinny belt and open-toe heels.

Long Full Skirt - Longer skirts are the newest must-have hemline. You can look stylish even sitting on the floor in playgroup.

Date Night: Figure-flattering pencil skirts at just below, or just above the knee look fabulous belted with a feminine floral top.

Playgroup: African-influenced patterns, clashing stripes and paintbrush strokes on mid-length and maxi skirts can be mixed with unexpected patterns on top.

Working-Mom: A nude/beige pleated skirt that falls just below the knees with sheer layers on top and lace and ruffle details.

Updated Accessories - From neon to bright white to stripes and prints galore, here are some of the must-have accessories to amp up the neutral palette and balance out the wilder print combinations of the season, no matter where you are going: 1. Stacks of big and bold bangles in combinations of different materials like wood, metal and plastic in bright colors or animal prints. 2. Tribal earrings, necklaces with beading and belts with geometric closures add an exotic influence. 3. 70s-inspired sunglasses, from aviators to oversize lenses, are hot in both bright colors and tortoise shell frames. 4. Handbags in leather or vinyl with laser cuts come in printed or solid fabric, nylon and straw materials. Structured styles complement the popular geometric shapes on clothing. 5. Shoes with details like bows or flowers. 6. Gladiator inspired shoes are still hot as well. 7. Light scarfs and hats are also a fashionable spring and summer accessory.

Congrats to Beth! Stay tuned for more fun giveaways everyone!

30 Second Makeup Routine

The second Fashion and Beauty Week post is about a quick 30 second make-up routine. For work-at-home moms and stay-at-home moms, wearing makeup is not necessarily at the same priority as when working in an office. Nor is the amount of makeup. For working-moms, getting the kids ready for daycare, as well as yourself for work, leaves little time for makeup fuss too.

So here is my take on what you need to look fresh and put together, even if you are only seeing the delivery guy at the front door, or the check-out clerk at the grocery store.

I mentioned Jane Iredale as a product I like. Here is the link if you are interested in more information on that product brand.
