How to Give an Infant Massage

Giving your baby a massage has so many benefits, it is hard to know where to begin to share them all!

I learned about infant massage during a class at Isis Parenting when I had my first son, and we had a nightly ritual of a post-bath massage until he was 18 month old. We have even continued it to this day with a mini-back rub before he goes to sleep. I have now begun the same bonding ritual with my daughter and find it is the perfect time to connect with her after the end of a busy day. I think I am even more conscious of this daily activity since it is often hard to find one-on-one time with her; she needs to share my time and attention with her big brother!

Don’t despair if you have never done this before as it is never too late to start. But starting early and being consistent has many proven physical, mental and emotional benefits. It is more than a sense of touch and the act of cuddling. There are proven benefits with infant massage as a communication tool, and as a way to improve digestion, stimulate brain development, boost the immune system, and reduce stress. During those critical growth periods, like digestive maturing and teething, infant massage can lessen the stress. In fact, studies show that a five minute massage enhances the performance of babies and children on tasks that require attentiveness.

So what do you need to know to get started?

  • While there is no time you have to stop, you should start when your baby is at least three weeks old.
  • Don’t force the massage on your baby. Ask for permission using sign language or other cue.
  • Wait for the right time; quiet, alert, happy. This could be before or after a nap, after waking up in the morning or before going to sleep at night.
  • Don’t give a massage if your baby is sick, has a rash, just had some shots 48-72 hours prior, has eaten in the last 30 minutes, or is otherwise sad enough that the prospect of a pending massage does not lessen their crankiness.
  • Lower the lights and/or play soft soft music to provide a soothing atmosphere for your baby and you. Eliminate outside distractions, like your cell phone too.
  • Pick a lotion that is safe and beneficial to you and your baby.
Olive oil is a great massage oil. Seventh Generation has incorporated Olive Oil into their new line of baby products with bio-based ingredients. It is a great lotion to use for infant massage and it was fun to give a $50 basket of these products to Brook S.! Thanks to everyone who left a comment to enter the giveaway. It’s a Bean Party!

Join Magic Beans, Nested Bean and myself on Monday, November 5th at 9 pm ET for a Bean Party! (#BeanParty)

We’ll be chatting about getting sleep with a newborn in the house, everything from swaddling, including infant sleep facts, swaddling info and your tips and tricks for helping baby drift off! There will be over $350 in prizes – including fabulous Magic Beans Gift Cards and several of Nested Bean’s Zen Swaddles!

Nested Bean’s Zen Swaddle was developed by a sleep-deprived mom who noticed that her son only slept while in her arms. Desperate for relief, she studied infant sleep patterns and the physiological benefits they get from being in our arms. The result is the Zen Swaddle, which makes babies feel as though they’re being held. This comforts them and allows them to rest. It is the newest swaddle on the market and the only one that promises up to two hours of additional nighttime sleep by mimicking your touch. It was recently awarded the JPMA 2012 Innovations Award!

How to Pick Pacifiers and Bottles

There is nothing like walking into a big baby store when registering for your baby shower and seeing a wall, yes a wall, that is 10 feet long by 10 feet high filled with baby bottles and pacifiers. Talk about overwhelming. And your baby hasn’t even arrived yet!

The problem with this fact is that your baby, even at an early age, will have a preference for one bottle or one pacifier over another. So it is almost impossible to pick the perfect bottle or pacifier.

So here are some tips.

1. Register for a few baby bottle and pacifier brands. This way you have a selection on hand to try out in the first weeks of bringing your baby home. This includes nursing mothers too, as breastfeeding experts typically advise breastfeeding moms to introduce a bottle as soon as breastfeeding is established.

2. Don’t register for too many bottles or pacifiers.

  • Similar to the point made above, you don’t know what your baby will like, so you don’t want too many of one type that you are left having to donate or throw out.
  • You will need to change nipple types and pacifiers along the way. Nipples come in different flows (milk speed if you will) that will get faster as your baby gets older. Plus pacifiers come in sizes to fit the mouth size of a newborn, which is different than the size of a six month old. And, of course, nipples and pacifiers wear out. The typical recommendation is to replace pacifiers and nipples every six-eight weeks or if you see wear and tear.

3. Look for key features to make it a natural transition from breast to bottle, nipples to pacifiers.

  • For pacifiers: Consider products that have orthodontically correct nipple that gives babies the sucking satisfication while maintaining proper jaw and tooth alignment. Also look for pacifiers that are BPA-free, PVC-free, lead-free, CPSIA-compliant. Based on personal experience, I also suggest looking for pacifiers that you can microwave and put in the dishwasher to sanitize and clean. Makes life a lot easier!
  • For bottles: Look for bottles with clear measuring guides on the bottle for correctly mixing formula. Also look for a wide top to make it easier to pour in stored breast milk or mix in formula powder without spilling it everywhere. (Not that I speak from experience or anything…) Also look at features that minimizes air to reduce potential gas in your baby. Lastly, look for nipples that mimic the breast especially if you are going to be switching from bottle to breast and back. Similar to pacifiers, make sure they are BPA-free, PVC-free, lead-free, CPSIA-compliant and that you can microwave and put in the dishwasher to sanitize and clean.

There are a few brands I would recommend looking into, to help you get started. One that I have tried for my first child and now my second, are MAM Baby pacifiers and bottles.

I’ve always liked MAM pacifiers. Not only are the designs fun (you can even personalize some of them with your baby’s name), but the plastic around the nipple allows the area around a baby’s mouth to ‘breathe’. I’ve also trusted MAM Baby‘s claims that the nipples maintains proper jaw alignment and teeth development. Not something you consider before your baby arrives, but becomes an essential point once they are at home. Plus, they come in natural latex or silicone. (The MAM Perfect Pacifiers are the softest ones for less mouth pressure.)

The MAM Baby Anti-Colic bottles really attempt to achieve an easy transition from breast. As you can see from the picture, my baby mouth is in the similar shape as if she was on the breast. Note that there are a lot of pieces with a MAM Baby Anti-Colic Bottle, so you need to clean separate parts by hand or in the dishwasher. A bit of a pain in the arse. However, knowing that you can give your baby a breast-friendly bottle so you can go out to dinner, without sacrificing your breastfeeding achievements, is priceless. So it may be worth the extra steps. Yet, one fact that makes up for it is that this bottle self-sterilizes. (For real.)

All in all, hopefully these tips will help you navigate the bottle aisle and pacifier shelves. But don’t panic if what you bought is ultimately not the ‘right one. Keep trying. Soon you’ll find one that works for your baby and you.

CitrusLane

Each month, Citrus Lane fills boxes with 4 or 5 baby products along with helpful parenting tips and tricks. Each box is tailored specifically to your child’s age and stage, from newborn up to 18 months. It’s like getting a birthday gift all the time.
