Summer Beauty Trends

Thanks to Walgreens for underwriting this post. I was paid as a member of the Clever Girls Collective, but the content is all mine. Visit http://www.discoverbeautywithin.com/.

It is hard to believe that summer is almost here, but this year I’m more acutely aware of the start of summer because that is when this baby bump of mine is set to make an appearance.

At this point in my pregnancy, I’m not feeling very glamorous, but despite my pregnancy shortcomings, I still follow the summer trends. While I don’t think, for example, that horizontal stripes are a good look for pregnant woman, it definitely rocks for everyone else.

So my focus is what I can do with makeup. I may be limited in wardrobe selection, but I can always be on trend by mirroring fashion must-haves with beauty basics, and so can you. Even if your budget doesn’t extend to new summer-must-haves in the clothing department, set aside some cash for some great finds at the local drugstore, like Walgreens, to spruce things up for summer. Are you more ‘au-natural’? Walgreens, for example, has organic and nature beauty products too.

Stripes: Like I mentioned above, stripes are big in fashion for summer. But a way to transition it is to think Nail Art. Add bold stripes to your mani or pedi. Or add layers of color for a rainbow effect. If you are concerned that horizontal stripes make you look fat, then no worries in sporting stripes on your fingers.

Nail Art

Neon and Brights: Whether in shoes, bags or accessories, I keep having flashbacks to the 80s, but the hot pink and bright yellows are summer-must-haves. Even if I wasn’t pregnant, I’m not sure I can pull off bright yellow in my clothing, but sporting it on my toes? Totally. So pick up a bottle, and start painting those piggies. Or pucker up and paint your lips a fabulous shade of hot pink.

Sun-kissed Glow: Let’s face it, this is a must-have look every summer. That tussled, I just-spent-a-day-at-the-beach-and-I-wasn’t-running-after-kids look. But being older means being wiser, right? So skip the sun and slather on sunscreen. Then fake the tan with some awesome bronzer on your cheekbones. Don’t forget about the rest of your body. Spray on SPF and if you want a little color, try tinted body lotions.

JergensNaturalGlowBodyMoisturizer

Tubular tresses: Anything goes, really, for your hair this summer, but the key is keeping it non-frizzy. Use products to fight the frizz or find cool bobby pins to make a bun from a breezy pony tail or pick out a cute hair accessory like a headband to add a pop of color or pattern (think bold or stripes to mirror the trends mentioned above.)

HerbalEssencesAnti-Frizz Conditioner

Lastly, my two other summer beauty must-haves are (1) waterproof mascara and (2) club soda. There is something about heat that makes mascara melt, so this is the one time a year to use it in place of your regular mascara. You can typically make the switch easily as most product lines also include a waterproof version. Oh, and what about the club soda? While it may be a great base for fabulous summer cocktails, it is a beauty essential. Take it from this former collegiate and masters synchronized swimmer, drenching your hair in club soda post-pool party can minimize chemical damage and keep your locks looking luxurious.

And if you do nothing else, at least pick up a bright shade of lipstick. There is nothing better than that to catapult you from winter to summer in a flash.

Edit-WetnWild Hot Paris Pink Lipstick

Whether you pick up yellow polish and hot pink lipstick, a striped headband, sunscreen and bronzer, or bobby pins and club soda, adding a couple of these easy-to-find and won’t-break-the-bank drugstore beauty items, can perk you up for summer. And trust me when I say I will be putting hot pink gloss on my lips and a cute headband in my more-than-likely unwashed hair to get me through my upcoming early newborn days; there is nothing better to help a postpartum Mom feel glam when she has fantastic lip color and a cute hair-do to feel put together (…..even if you’re really not.)

HATCHEDit Online Family Management

If you have kids, a spouse, babysitter, dog walker, PTA meetings, Moms groups, sports schedule, dance classes, and grandparents (just to name a few), it can be hard to juggle. And remember where to be. And to whom to remind to do XYZ. Sounds like you might need HATCHEDit

If you are a Mac user and your partner a PC user, we all know that can spell sync-ing disaster that usually requires a separate calendar. Emails clog our inboxes as we try to plan Mom events. Trying to follow an email stream as to when to pick up whom where and when can be parental overload.

Two Moms wanted a better way and created an online management system to help us juggle it all. Send invites, have a shared contact list, coordinate calendars for up to 8 people, plan events with other users – all in one platform. It is called HATCHEDit.

HATCHEDit Logo

For example, if the grandparents are watching the kids for the weekend, they can have access to your calendar so they know where to be and when. Give the babysitter access to key contacts, like the pediatrician, without having to leave notes everywhere. Don’t want them to see the details of your Mom group? You can determine what extent you give access to your full account.

The hubby can add his activities and events with his own color code, and each child can have their own, all on one master calendar. Have a running stream for planning who is bringing drinks, apps or dessert at the next Mom night out. Easily upload your existing contacts and create reoccurring events. While the product is still in beta-land, the platform is already robust and will keep getting better. For example, Andriod and iPhone apps by the end of February, and a To-Do list function.

So if you need a better way to be organized in 2012, you should definitely check it out. Watch the video overview and know that you can be organized in less than 24 hours. For free.

Top Technology Trends for 2012

gI_83412_hotels-social-mediaLast week, there was a huge conference for technology buffs called the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Companies, designers, developers, Dads and Moms were all in Sin City for a glimpse at the latest and greatest tech devices, tools and software. I couldn’t make it, but I watched the reports, blogs and tweets for the cool concepts expected for 2012. There was a huge list and a range of perspectives, but here is what seems to be on the techie horizon as it relates to us parents.

Keep your Head in the Cloud

While most of us grew up with our parents telling us to get our “head out of the cloud”, turns out we shouldn’t have listened to them. Otherwise, we may be millionaires. Those that kept their head in the clouds actually, uh, created them. Since many of us are moving more and more of our stuff (movies, music, calendars, budgets) online, more and more companies are creating new products to help us manage our various puffy online “clouds”.

Clap on, Clap Off

Remember when the product “The Clapper” was the big thing? When you could walk in the house, clap your hands and the lights would turn on? How passé is that? Actually have to walk in the house, and have only the lights come on? How limiting! New technology is making headway in enabling us to start the car, unlock the door, turn on the oven (eliminating the chicken-still-frozen problem), and turn on the air-conditioning, when we are in the next town at the after-school soccer practice. So seems as if big things will be coming in this arena.

No one is Home!

With many families carrying cell phones and using technologies like Skype, who needs a home phone (and the extra expense that comes with it?) With more people moving to cell phones (smartphones in particular, see below) and computers to make calls, expect more “landline alternatives” to emerge this year.

Future Techies

Ah yes, kids and their electronics. Kinda like Laverne and Shirley, or Laurel and Hardy. More brands have apps and accessories for kids – whether they are 2 or 22 – and it is only going to continue to grow. As a result, expect more parent-help tracking devices and features to limit content and usage. (Reminds me of what my parents did to the cable box in the 80s.)

Bling your Vrrr-ring

Moving past the crystal-bling smartphone covers, most people are now looking to what the smartphone, tablets and other tech devices we tote around can actually do for us. Change the channel? Become a projector? Make us dinner? Seriously though, as we expect more from our smartphone and tablets, expect more innovations that will increase the capabilities of them.

Stay tuned for specific product features in the year ahead as some of the companies launch products in these areas. We may not be driving in the sky supposedly like we should be doing if “Back to the Future” and “The Jetsons” were any indication. But then again, I don’t remember them walking around with an iPhone either.

HTC Rhyme Review

If you are in the market for a new smartphone, definitely put the HTC Rhyme on your “must-see” list. With a docking station, charm indicator, frequently used app organizer, and a cool cranberry color, you will be one hip and organized Mom.

Disney Mom

The day I came back from my Disney Vacation with my husband and toddler, I got this email. (Ironic, isn’t it.)

Yup. Rejected. Again.

This is the third time I have applied. I am not sure what I am saying (or not saying) that is not getting me to the next round, but I have to say, it stings.

While some local bloggers have stated that I am not a ‘big’ enough blogger to merit the attention from the likes of Disney, I thought it was more about my knowledge of Disney. Not sure what is the percentage of Disney Panel applicants that have been to Disney more than 30 times, have done every Disney tour possible and have even run 26.2 miles on Disney property, but I even took a trip with my 23 month old to keep up with the Disney happenings as it pertains to young children: took the time to talk to cast members, chatted with other Moms at the water parks or in the rider swap lines. So to say I was serious about my application? Totally.

Disney Family Picture

So once again, the opportunity passes me by, and my hopes for getting an invitation to the Disney Social Moms Conference diminishes too. Though I did get an invite to attend the first Disney Social Media Moms conference, I was still post-partum and wasn’t cleared to fly. But the same blogging community also said that other ‘bigger’ bloggers’ should get invites before me to that event too.

Whatever.

So while I am not an official Disney Mom anything, I do know a lot and will be sharing my recent Disney experience with you all. I suppose this way I can be brutally honest and give you the good and bad of Disney based on my 30+ years of Disney experience. So stay tuned for some funny (and real) Disney Mom posts. Even if I am not a ‘big blogger’ or an ‘official’ Disney Mom.

So later gators – I’m off to look into a Disney Cruise….

Become

It has been many years since Title IX, but as a little girl that (attempted) to play sports prior to that ground breaking initiative, I know first hand the difference that it has made for girls, young women and women in school leagues, state leagues, college or professional levels. Gatorade knows that too.

Even though it has been 40 years this upcoming May, we still need to show our continued support and Gatorade is calling upon women & Moms, like us, to pledge their support to young female athletes in their quest to BECOME {amazing, great, strong, smart, powerful, inspirational….}. As Moms, it is often on the sidelines or in the mini-van saddle. Wiping tears, bandaging boo-boos or celebrating a victory. We help them BECOME in our small ways, but here is another way.

For every online click at www.Gatordate.com/Moms, Gatorade will donate one dollar up to $10,000 to the Women’s Sports Foundation (just click “take the pledge now” on the main Gatorade Moms page). Simply read the pledge, click to commit (free! don’t have to receive mail/emails) and Gatorade will donate a dollar in support of girls’ and women’s sports.

The donation will help ensure there are opportunities for all children who want to get physically active, get involved in competitive athletics and get in the game. So for a minute of your time, let’s support girl and women athletes, as well as Gatorade that’s encouraging them to succeed. We both would love you to support this cause, so Gatorade has donated an autographed soccer ball from Brandi Chastain!

Brandi is a professional American soccer defender and midfielder who plays for the team California Storm of Women’s Premier Soccer League and is a former member of the United States women’s national soccer team. She is best known for her game-winning penalty shootout kick against China in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final and her sports bra-baring celebration afterwards. (Loved that moment!)

To date, there are less than 1000 pledges and we need to get to 10,000 so please pledge and spread the word!

Congrats to Kate H. for winning the autographed soccer ball!

HTC Flyer Tablet

The HTC Flyer is a great option if you are in the market for a tablet. Here is my video on the three features of the Flyer that I consider to be Mom-tastic.

I also love the ability to take pictures (and video) in fun ways. For example, you can video in black and white, sepia, and more. The image below shows the cool ways to take pictures. As a Blogger, I think it is really neat option to have in my tool bag.

My only wish for the HTC Flyer is more video editing capability, as well as being able to multi-task, but otherwise, it is a great tablet that is competitive with the iPad2. See why.

Many thanks to HTC for loaning me the HTC FLyer to test drive for two weeks. (A great two weeks I might add.)

Run a 5k

I took up running today

Couch to 5k Program

I know a lot of you want to run a 5k, but don’t know where to start. If you have clearance to begin a running program, then you may want to check out Couch to 5k (C25K).

What I like about this plan is that is about time and not distance. You think of running in blocks of time, like 5 minutes. Not 1/2 mile. For some it make be semantics, but for many, it is a mental change that brings success.

However, what I love about this program is that it is only 20-30 minutes a day, 3 days a week. So even with a hectic parent life, it is totally doable. Plus, if Mom and Dad are fit, you are setting a great example for your kids. I can’t wait for the day when my toddler is able to do those kid fun runs and we can make a day out of participating in a road race. (They are so much fun….Yes, really.)

It is a 9 (free) week program, with a Facebook page, Twitter account and smartphone apps for the iPhone ($2.99) and Android ($1.99). So there is great support, encouragement and accessability. They also have a treadmill version and a great forum with podcasts and more for your new 5k regime. (When you are ready, they even have a 10k program. Just sayin’.)

Also check out CoolRunning.com. They are the folks who started all of this, and they are the place to go to find that first 5k race you will be running.

You can do it. Now get started.

{Charlene has 7 marathons under her belt, but after having a baby, she had to start from square one and this got her butt in gear. She is now learning how to run with a jogging stroller, which is a separate post entirely.}
