Parks and Playgrounds in Metrowest Boston

Spring has stuck and summer is staring us down. (Can I get a hallelujah?)

Here are two recommendations for Parks and two recommendations for Playgrounds around Metrowest, Massachusetts. They don’t charge admission either! (Though some parking fees or meters may apply.) Pack the sunscreen, beverages and either snacks or a lunch, so you can really enjoy these fabulous outdoor spaces. If you have a favorite park or playground, leave a comment below to share!

Hopkinton State Park. With two swimming beaches (summer only), fishing, picnic areas with tables and charcoal cooking grills, 10 miles of marked trails, and open field space, there is so much to do in one place. Leashed dogs are welcome in most areas. The park is open everyday at 8am and closes at dusk in the spring and fall and at 8pm in the summer. Don’t panic – there are public restrooms are available during the spring, summer and fall months. Auto parking is $5, but you can get a Parks Pass for $35 (good from January-December).

Warren Park in Wellesley. Plenty of free parking and the playground has two play areas – one for toddlers and one for older kids. There are slides, climbing structures, sandboxes, seesaws, benches to sit on, and the equipment is well maintained. It is also fenced in for safety. There is a big grassy area if you want to have a picnic or bring a soccer ball. There is a sidewalk if you want to take a quick walk down the street for pizza or coffee.

The Sudbury Playground. There are two areas: one for 5 – 12 year olds and a 2 – 5 year old tot area. It is partially fenced so there is definitely a need to keep an eye those fast toddlers. There are slides, climbers, several swings, some sandboxes and ride ons. There are soccer fields surrounding the playground for running, playing ball or having a picnic. Yet, there are also fun interactive objects like bells and animal footprints, and colored plates to assist visually impaired children. There is also a transfer station near a couple of slides for children in wheelchairs who can get in and out with assistance. Parking is free and there is a restroom on-site.

Martini Junction in Needham. In the Needham Town Forest, there is a trail with bird houses and a miniature railroad set with hundreds of feet of track to find. Kids love going on the hike and finding the treasure that is nestled in the forest. It is part of geocaching – a fun way to explore a variety of places, including this one. To learn more about geocaching, click here. Best for kids 5 and up.

Enjoy!

Sesame Street Live

I have such fond memories of Sesame Street. According to my Mom, that’s all I would want to watch when I was a little girl. I even saw Sesame Street live when I was around 7 years old. Since I recall that, it is obviously a great experience that I remember.

Now as a Mom, I am so happy that Sesame Street is still running strong and it is something that I can share with my own children. Of course, Elmo is my son’s favorite, as evidenced by this picture.

Elmo

When I heard that Sesame Street Live was coming to the Agganis Arena during school vacation week here in Massachusetts (shows from April 20-April 22, 2012), I was so excited to share that experience with my toddler too. He can sing and dance with Elmo and all the Sesame Street friends, and the show is a story of adventure and fun that teaches children they can be anyone, do anything and go anywhere with the power of imagination. That is why Sesame Street – whether live, or on TV, is such a great experience for kids. They are educated and empowered at the same time.

While the show is an experience in and of itself, kids can get their sillies out by playing in the Play Zone before the show. Kids can sit in Big Bird’s nest, pop-up in Oscar’s trash can, or visit Elmo’s World. They can see various Sesame Street characters up close too! Talk about some amazing pictures! So bring the camera and you’ll have some amazing memories (and some holiday card options in a few months!) The Play Zone opens one hour before the show and is FREE with a Sesame Street Live ticket!

Here’s a sneak peek:

I am excited to be taking my son (and my Mom who I mentioned at the beginning of this post), thanks to the Sesame Street partners giving us complimentary tickets. But one of you can go too! Just leave a comment and one person will win a voucher of a 4 pack of family tickets to see the show of your choice. What a great way to make some memories! Contest has ended. Easter Egg Hunts in Massachusetts

For many, the best signs of Spring are plastic eggs filled with candy and those little marshmallow peeps.

However, a lot of easter egg hunts are for town residents only. While many of those events don’t check to see where you live, I want to be respectful of the event organizers, so check with your local town hall or newspaper to see what is available where you live. Yet, there are three Easter Egg hunts that are available to all.

If you know of others, let me know in the comments below.

  • Linden Square is hosting a fun-filled free event for the local Metrowest community in Wellesley, MA on April 7th at 2pm. The courtyard will be the backdrop for all the festivities including a meet and greet with the Easter Bunny, face painting, an Easter egg hunt, treat bags, and snacks. All are welcome to attend and are encouraged to bring their own camera for photos. If raining, the event will move to under the overhang by Magic Beans at Linden Square.
  • Hop to the Bunny Bonanzoo at Stone Zoo in Stoneham, MA on April 7th from 10am-3pm. In addition to the regular zoo fun, there will be scavenger hunts, crafts, opportunities to meet the zookeepers and other surprises. While at the Zoo, families can visit with the Easter Bunny, who will be available for photographs so bring your camera! Adults are $13 and children ages 2-12 are $9. But if you between 10 a.m. and noon, all guests will be charged children’s admission of $9.
  • Jam Time in Maynard has an Easter Party from 10am-12pm on Saturday, April 7th. Visit by the Easter Bunny, arts and crafts, and chocolate goodies for each child. Not sure of the cost, but probably $10 per child, which is the standard admission to Jam Time. But call for details and space availability. 978-897-2917.
  • If you are staying local, swing by Unleashed by Petco in Wellesley from 12-3pm on Sunday, April 8th so your dog can enjoy the fun too. There will be treats inside the eggs, and they can roam around the store for some exercise.
  • On Saturday and Sunday (April 7-8) at Patriot Place in Foxboro, get your picture taken with The Easter Bunny and enjoy Easter crafts for kids. Join the Easter Egg Hunts for a chance to win prizes. For a more detailed schedule, visit www.patriot-place.com.

Happy Hopping.

Next Size Up Kids Consignment Sale

The Next Size Up Kids’ Consignment Sale will hold its biggest event on Thursday, March 29, 2012-April 1, 2012 at the former Borders Books on Route 1 in North Attleboro. Parents can shop from thousands of gently-used toys, clothing, baby gear, books, DVDs, video games, kids decor and more. (And save a lot of money in the process!)

According to Tiffany Miller, who co-founded Next Size Up, “Our shoppers are always telling us how impressed they are with the quality of our items. We have a team of volunteers who spend many, many hours looking at every single item we sell – they check clothing for stains and wear, test toys and make sure high chairs and strollers are clean and in good working order.”

Charity is another important aspect of the Next Size Up sale. Food pantry donations will be collected throughout the sale, and shoppers are encouraged to bring not only non-perishable food, but also diapers, wipes and similar items that benefit children. Consignors are also given the option of leaving unsold items with Next Size Up for donation to Cradles to Crayons, a charity that works directly with families in need. Furthermore, if you have quality, clean children’s clothing, shoes, coats, books and baby equipment that you want to donate, stop by the sale on Sunday, April 1, from 2 to 5 PM and it will be added to the Cradles to Crayons donation truck.

The consignment sale will be open to the public with free admission Friday, March 30, from 9 AM to 9 PM and Saturday, March 31, from 9 AM to 6 PM. Cash, VISA and Mastercard are accepted. On Sunday, April 1, many items will be marked down to half-price. Anyone bringing two items for the local food pantry for the Sunday half-price sale can get early admission at 9:30 AM.

A private presale will be held Thursday, March 29, from 7 to 10 PM with a $10 admission charge. (Active military moms and dads can sign up for free passes on the sale website.)

(*Note: no winner from previously posted giveaway as the required number of entrants was not reached.)

Quinn Popcorn

When I was grocery shopping last weekend at Whole Foods, I saw this in a display section.

Quinn Popcorn Box

I don’t know what drew me to it. The box design? The fact that it was microwave popcorn? Well, whatever the reason, the ploy worked. The really cool popcorn flavors sweetened the pot. Parmesan & Rosemary? Lemon & Sea Salt? Vermont Maple & Sea Salt?

Yes, please.

Then I saw that is was all natural popcorn, with no hydrogenated oils, no preservatives, GMO free, rBGH free, with a pure bag that is just paper. That sealed the deal. I squirreled it away in my shopping cart.

Just like ordinary microwave popcorn, you put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. Then you get to be a bit of a culinary wonder.

Quinn Popcorn Spices

You add the separate packet of GMO free canola oil into the bag. Give it a shake. Then you add the packet of natural spices. Shimmy shake again. Then dig in or put into a bowl for sharing. Though, really, you may not want to share.

But I had to fork over the goods, because my toddler got a whiff. Actually, I think the popping noise in the microwave gave me away. (Microwave traitor!) I think he ate more than his fair share, so if you wonder if it passes the kid test, I would say a strong yes.

I love how the product, and the packaging, is pure as can be. I love how it is a Massachusetts-based company. (I’m a bit biased.) I also love their website and super cute instructions on the packaging. Oh, and this is just the first round. More posh popcorn is coming down the pike. And they are totally open to feedback.

Quinn Popcorn Pack

So for a fancy popcorn and wine party (great idea, eh?) or a Saturday afternoon movie fest, pop a bag, know it is free of yucky stuff and still yummy too.

Happy noshing. (You can thank me later.)

Edaville Festival of Lights

Edaville Railroad is a Massachusetts experience. Based in Carver, MA, it is a fun oasis for many families. For those that have not been to Edaville’s Festival of Lights, or haven’t been in years, I encourage your families’ to consider going. Here is why.

It is magical.

The music, the sights, and the lights. The displays, the trains, a visit with Santa if you are so inclined and, new for this year, a special train ride on the Polar Express. Not to forget the hot chocolate, warm fried dough and many, many memories!

If you want to experience the new Polar Express, there will be trains on December 12, 13, 24 & 31st. Trains depart at 4:30pm, 5:30pm, 6:30pm and 7:30pm (takes about 40 minutes) and you will have full access to the park (with kiddie rides) from 4-9pm. The Edaville Polar Express will transport everyone to the North Pole. There Santa will board the train and greet the children, each receiving their own jingle bell just as in the story. Enjoy a reading of the book, carols by costumed Chefs and over 7 million Christmas lights!!! Hot chocolate and cookies will be served in the white tent after the ride. The cost is $30 per person, but kids under 2 are free. And yes, the trains are heated!

In addition to the Polar Express festivities, there is also the Festival of Lights. It will be open weekdays from 4-9pm and weekends from 2pm-9pm from now until January 1st (they are closed December 12 and 13th and on Christmas Day). The cost is $18 for people ages 2-64, $16 ages 65+ and kids under age 2 are free. It includes unlimited basic train rides (takes about 20 minutes and the trains are heated), park activities and kiddie rides.

If you have younger children, the best time to go is around 4pm. Fresh from naps, they can be ready for some fun. It is also semi-dark around that time so you can get the wow factor when you pull into the parking lot. For those kiddos that need their beauty sleep, it will probably give you two to three hours of fun so you can head home in time for bed.

Make sure to bundle up! You will be outside 99% of the time. So think in terms of long-johns, hand-warmers and scarfs. You can always take off layers, but if you go un-prepared, the kids will be freezing before you get to the back of the park.

When you get to Edaville, there is a tendency to get caught up in the lights and sights, but I suggest heading to the train first. Everyone else will be oohing and ahhing over the lights, so the train line, earlier in the night, is shorter and quicker. The later it gets, the longer the line and the more likely the tantrums. Plus, if you need to leave the park early, you don’t want to have missed the train ride, which comprises most of the ticket cost. Then, if you have time and the line is not too long, you can go again since the tickets allow for unlimited train rides.

Then you can leisurely wander around and take in the ambiance of the season. If you are Santa fans, they have a Santa’s Village in the large brick building near the back left of the park. There is an extra cost for Santa photos and, at times, there can be long lines. So it might be something to check out, but be ready to pass it up too if it is too busy. There is also an indoor play space for younger kids. This may be a great place to warm up, but be prepared for a lot of other people doing the same thing. Personally, I think if you are going to do the Edaville Festival of Lights, by-pass this section if you can. Otherwise, it may be hard to get the kids to go back out in the cold and see the lights.

There are plenty of kid rides to enjoy (total of 11 or so), but there are height limits on many of them. So for kids under 2, don’t expect them to be able to go on much. For other rides, the younger kids might make the height requirement, but they often have to go on alone. So depending on how trustworthy your 22 month old is to stay sitting on the ride, you may want to pass those too. However, there are many little wooden trains for them to climb in and explore, and some of the rides a parent can accompany their child, so you do get a decent smattering of rides to experience.

The older ones have more to choose from, like a Ferris Wheel. Edaville Railroad’s website has a section that lists the rides and the height requirements so it is a great resource to check out before you go.

They have concession stands, which is a great option for fried dough or hot chocolate. They also have a cafeteria where you can get drinks and hot dogs, but it can get busy. So it might be best to bring some snack bars while you wait. However, you can bring a picnic. They have picnic tables at the front of the park if you want that option.

Parking is free. It is about an hour’s drive from the Boston area and if you follow Edaville on Facebook and/or Twitter, they may be offering more details and discounts. Also, check out their 4 minute video. If you fast-forward to the 2 minute mark, you can get a sneak peek of what the Festival of Lights is like before you decide if the trip is right for you family.
