Toddler Seat Belt for Airplanes | The CARES® Airplane Safety Harness for Kids

There are many ways we keep our kids safe everyday. We have child-proofed our home, bought the best car seats, cribs and strollers we can possibly buy. Yet, when it comes to flying on an airplane, we seem to forget to provide similar safety measures for our kids. Often having babies sit on our lap or relying on the airplane seat belts to do a good job of keeping our toddlers and preschoolers secure.

As a Mom to two children (3 years old and 10 months old), and having flown with my kids three times in the past five months alone, I know that your child can easily get out of that airplane seat belt and that the plane can suddenly jerk and drop as it goes through turbulence. Whether it is safety first or sanity first, these two products are must haves for baby registries or before you book your next flight.

Now, if you aren’t totally convinced you need these for safety, consider this. Do you want to have to hold your baby for 3 hours straight? Do you want your toddler to make easy work of the airplane seat belt and be bouncing around the plane while you tell him to stop?

Me neither.

What is great about the (affiliate link) CARES® Child Airplane Travel Harness is that it keeps the kids safe from airplane turbulance, but has the added bonus of keeping them secure and not bothering the passengers in front of you (loud voices or crying not included.) The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), the National Transportation Safety Board, the American Academy of Pediatrics and even airlines urge parents to bring along certified child restraints for their children when they fly. Probably for the reason of safety vs. keeping your kids behaved, but whatever works, right?

The CARES® Airplane Safety Harness that my son wore on our recent flight is designed for kids 22-44 lbs who have their own seat (which is required for kids 2 and older.) It is light and comes with its own pouch, which made it easy to stash in our diaper bag. It is safe for all parts of the flight (ground, take off, during the flight, landing, taxi-ing) and can be used on an U.S. registered aircraft flying domestically or internationally. CARES is also certified by the aviation authorities in at least eight other countries, from Canada to Singapore.

As you can see, he was cool with it because it is similar to the five point harness in his car seat.

I’m cool with it because it is the only product that is approved by the FAA. Some other products to consider for babies is the (affiliate linkBaby B’Air Toddler Flight Vest. While infants are the safest in a car seat, if you do travel with them on your lap, this will keep them safe in flight. You just can’t use it for take off or landing.

So between the Flight Vest for my baby and the CARES Airplane Safety Harness for my preschooler, we are prepared for wherever our next flight takes us! Just remember to pack lots of snacks, juice, diapers, books and toys (maybe even the electronic kind, like an iPad) as well as to dress everyone in layers, to keep cool or warm depending on the plane, to keep everyone happy en route.

What other tips or products do you recommend for flying?

MD Moms Wipes: Perfect for Travel

While I can rent a lot of baby items or bring a lot of baby gear with me when I travel, there was one item I couldn’t rent or bring: a baby bathtub. It was when I realized the huge benefit of the Gentle All-Over Clean Cleansing Towelettes by MD Moms.

My seven month old and I have done a lot of traveling in her short life: A business trip New York when she was six weeks old to a Disney vacation when she was five months old, and other trip when she was eight months old (and yet another next week.) This, of course, doesn’t include the daily travels we have (grocery store, mall, errands, gym, playgroup).

I give Baby G a bath every night and, when she was especially young, a traditional bathtub was not an option. Too slippery, too dangerous. Plus, she would scream her head off otherwise. So I use a portable bathtub, like this one, but it is most definitely not packable, and hotels don’t offer baby bathtubs. If we are in a hotel, a sponge bath is an option, but there are limited hotel towels and the bathroom was soping wet after we were done. Not something my husband appreciated (or the housecleaning staff.) I also felt like I wasn’t cleaning her very well, so I needed a new solution. It was then I remembered the MD Moms Gentle All-Over Clean Cleansing Towelettes I used for my son when he was a baby.

They are alcohol-free and hypoallergenic. You can use them from “your nose to your toes” as the product states. I especially love the fact that they are made in the USA (yay!) and there is no animal testing.

The added benefit I have found is that the towelettes protected her skin during the winter months. As we go through several extreme cold snaps, her skin got very dry. So we cut back on the nightly baths, and we used the MD Moms Wipes on her non-bath nights to get her clean without the drying effect of water and soap. Even now as summer is upon us, we still have the same routine.

I personally like them for me. When showering is not an option (let’s face it, if you have young kids, that is pretty often) this will do the trick. I throw a Travel Pack in my diaper bag, gym bag or, of course, my suitcase when I head out my travels. Plus, I use them for the moments when my kiddos get pretty dirty on the go (spit up, food spills, dirt from the playground, you name it.)

You can find them everywhere for around $12 for the tub size or about $6 for the travel size. MD Moms also has body wash, lotions and the absolute best Sunscreen Towelettes that, frankly, I could write a whole other post about. They are one of my must-have diaper bag items and my must-have travel item too!

My A to G Adventures in the New Toyota RAV4

This will be my ride for one week! The premium edition of the new Toyota RAV4. I mentioned that I would be getting a chance to test drive it in my previous post. And I got a chance to be a passenger on a recent four state adventure. But it is now in my driveway.

Isn’t it snazz-a-licious?

It’s clean too. My kids are on a juice and snack ban in the car this week!

We are going on a #MyRAV4Adventure. Since I have it for 7 days, we are doing A to G excursions. Going to seven places in seven days from A to G. Fun spaces, typical Mom places. All to see how the new Toyota Rav 4 fits our family life with the new Toyota RAV4 interior and exterior pictures showing all the “fun in the 4″!

A – Airport

With enough cargo space to fit several suitcases, yet nimble enough to get around airport drop off, this was a perfect way to head off on vacation!

B – Birthday Party

The spacious front made it comfortable to snooze and catch up on some emails while waiting for my son’s friend’s birthday party to end.

C – Coffee Run

I need my Starbucks. Thank goodness for drive-thrus and plenty of cup holders. Plus good gas mileage so I could go on a coffee search.

D – Donation Day

One of my favorite features was the automatic life gate. Whether opening or closing, it was a quick work of loading and unloading the car. While this was donation day, the same can be said for everyday with shopping bags and strollers. Plus, the level of the trunk is not too high or too low, making my back very happy.

E – Excitement

Okay, so technically this is not a destination but as the old saying goes, sometimes it is not just the destination, but the road that gets you there. Or something like that. Either way, my son was over the moon with the car. Especially when I said he could sit in the drivers seat.

F – Food Store

I love the capacity of the new Toyota RAV4 but also the ability to still be able to park in busy areas. The car I had was the premium version. It had a backup camera with warning zones, and the same for the side view mirrors.

G – Grooming Salon

Even the dogs got a ride. Though, out of everyone, they weren’t that excited – solely based on the fact of where they were going, however.

But on the way back home, they were a bit more excited. Especially to sit in the back seat. Two dogs, one baby. Plenty of room.

So that is our new Toyota RAV4 Adventure! I must say, I really, really liked the car. Other than the fact it felt a bit more like a jeep than a car, it had all of the same features as my 2010 Lexux RX350, and even more so. While I was provided the car for a week to drive, I didn’t need it, if you know what I mean. We are already a two car household so there was no benefit per se. So feel like I can unbiasedly say that I highly recommend the car and if you are in the market for a small SUV, this should definitely go on your car shopping list – especially the premium version of it.

Happy Driving! {Vroom!}

How to Save Money on Souvenirs at Disney World

Growing up, my parents were able to take us to Disney World by saving their money from clipping coupons. They didn’t have money left over to spend on souvenirs so we didn’t get to buy anything and always packed our lunches because we couldn’t afford the food in the parks. Now, with my kids, we have a little more leeway, but not too much. So I need to find ways on how to save money on souvenirs at Disney World.

how to save money on souvenirs at Disney World

I buy the souvenirs in advance of our vacationat the online Disney Store with online coupons and sales. Sign up for their newsletter to get notice on sales. Or do a Google or Bing search to find online promo codes. When you get to Disney, dole out the purchases! I also buy licensed t-shirts and things at the Super Walmart in Kissimmee, FL, just outside of Disney World. (All still support Disney!) I pack our our lunches to save money on some meals so we can buy ice cream/popcorn, that sort of thing, later in the day. While it is easy get groceries if you have a rental car, and have a kitchen in your room (like at the Disney Art of Animation Resort), you can still do it with a mini-fridge and a taxi ride. Here is my post on how to do that.

Regardless of how to save money on souvenirs at Disney World, I think it is also important to teach my children that while it is understandable to want the balloons, Disney ears, t-shirts, popcorn, it is about the magic of Disney itself that is most important. Plus, the fun is in the rides, the shows, and the characters.

If you want to provide something tangible, however, and you are on a really limited budget (or even if you aren’t!), one idea is to make a handmade autograph book. At Disney, there are autograph books for sale (around $8) and you can have the characters you meet ‘autograph’ the book. Yet, there is no rule that it has to be one of Disney’s books – they sign anything. So find a blank journal at a dollar store or thrift shop for a dollar or two. Then find pictures of various Disney characters online or in books from the library. Print them out or make photocopies them, and paste each character on one side of the journal. One page for Mickey Mouse, one for Minnie Mouse, one for Winnie the Pooh, one for Cinderella, etc. Or just decorate the book with Disney stickers. At the parks, have the character autograph the page opposite from the one with their picture on it! Don’t forget to take a picture while they are greeting your child! Then in future years, use the picture of your child greeting the character in the autograph book!

It is a great memory piece and gives something special to do for, and with, your children. It will keep their focus off the Disney popcorn and Mickey Mouse ice cream when they have a mission to find the characters in their specially made autograph book!
