Four At-Home Vacation Activities for Kids

While there are always scheduled school vacation events in your local community, sometimes the weather can thwart outdoor events. Or here in the Northeast, the standard winter break activities of ice skating or sledding are a no-go with our mild weather this season. Other considerations like budget, or even sick kids, can prevent you from taking even a local road trip to break up the daily boredom.

So here are four indoor, at-home, ideas to add some fun flair to any school vacation week.

1. Have an Indoor Campout. Lay out the blanket, sleeping bags and/or pitch a tent in the family room. Have hotdogs for dinner, and of course, no camp out is complete without smores. Hershey’s makes a great smores kit. Otherwise, use graham crackers, a chocolate bar (or even a chocolate spread like Nutella) and fluff. Turn out the lights, give everyone flashlights and take turns telling stories.

2. Have a Backwards Day. Let your kids wear their shirts backwards. Serve dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner. See what other backwards things they can come up with and try them out.

3. Create a Kid Oscar Party. Find old dresses in your closet or hit up a goodwill store for other garments and accessories. Set up a red carpet area with a video camera. Interview them and play it back on the TV or computer! Serve “Oscar” Mayer deli sandwiches. Then serve up some popcorn and pop in their favorite movie for a special screening.

4. Play Restaurant. Have them pick out the menu for dinner (or lunch). Go to the grocery store and let them find the ingredients. Back at home, give them crayons and paper to create the menus and receipts. Then have them pretend they are the head chef and cook the meal. Or have them be the waitstaff and serve Mom and Dad. (Remember to tip!)

What ideas do you have?

Pregnancy Cravings

Anyone who has ever been pregnant, has at one point craved something, somewhere at sometime. Whether something as simple as ice cream, as specific as mint chocolate chip ice cream or as strange as ice cream with relish toppings.

With my first pregnancy, I didn’t have any bizarre cravings but I did have two consistent ones. I had to have a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone everyday and had to have in the house at all times a bag of Trader Joes Olive Oil Popcorn.

With my second pregnancy, I crave lemonade. All…the…time. Grapefruit juice will sometimes be a decent substitution, but if my husband asks if I want apple juice, I may snap at him. The nature of hormones my friends.

However, there are times I eat something different. It is less of a craving and more of an ‘unusual take on the ordinary’. As I progress throughout the next few months, I’ll post pictures of the interesting things I ate. If you are squeamish, you may want to look the other way.

Happy Baby Food Review

Happy Baby Foods is a great brand that has been a part of our house since my first child was introduced to solid foods, and in about a year, I’ll be introducing baby number two to the same foods. Needless to say, we are huge fans. Not to say that we don’t have other products in our house, but, see for yourself….

Our Fridge

Happy Tot Squeeze Fruit

Happy Baby Food Pouches

Our Freezer

Happy Baby Frozen Food

Our Cabinet

Happy Baby Munchies and Melts

Then we have a stock pile in the basement where we store our supplies.

Why do we love it? Because it is what I would make for my baby or toddler if I had the time to do it. It is an organic brand of foods without artificial colors, preservatives, and flavors. The containers don’t contain phthalates, PBB’s, PBDE’s or bisphenol-A (BPA) either. Just real food with great mixtures like orange and pumpkin or peas and pears.

My first foray into the brand was the Happy Squeezer. I used to squeeze the tot pouches into a spoon and it feed to my baby. It made it easy to take in the diaper bag and was one less container to clean! When my son was teething, I even put the packet in the freezer (1-2hrs) to get it to a slushy consistency to help soothe his gums, although now it is just a fun summer snack. Now I just give him the packet directly and he squeezes it himself, directly into his mouth. I have been known to eat them myself when I am on the run and need real food, real fast….and this is just one product in a huge line of what they have.

Honestly, I can’t say enough about how comfortable I am giving any Happy product to my child when I just don’t have the time to make it, and he has loved the food since he was a baby. I don’t want this blog post to turn into an advertisement though, so here is a link to the FAQ section of Happy Baby so you can learn more about it directly.

If you haven’t tried it (or if you have and love it as we do), leave a comment and enter to win 2 free HappyMelts, 2 free HappyBaby Puffs, and 2 free Happy Munchies. Yum! Congrats to Mary R. for winning!

Disclosure: I received additional HappyBaby products, but the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Boston Stay-cation

Are you dreaming of a tropical vacation? Drooling over the commericals for a caribbean cruise?

Yeah, me too.

But time, budget, vacation days, and a whole of other factors usually keeps most of us in the “drool stage” only. But there are a couple of local options that may give you the break from daily life, even if it lacks tropical water.

Here are some great Boston hotel packages designed for families. Just in time for school vacation week!

Science Museum Stay and Play Package is offered by various Boston-based hotels so you can probably find one that fits the budget. Generally includes passes to the Museum of Science, transportation, overnight stay and breakfast, and the hotels are the Best Western Hotel Tria, Best Western Terrace Inn, the Omni Parker House, the Bullfinch Hotel, the Fairmont Copley and more.

The Colonnade Hotel Kids See & Do Package is an overnight stay with tickets to either the Children’s Museum or the New England Aquarium. Breakfast and a special gift for the kids rounds out this deal.

The Hotel Commonwealth Hotel for Kids Package includes cookies and milk, a teddy bear, a welcome backpack, complentary parking, and more. There is also a special Bedtime story PJ Event on February 24 and 25th that you may not want to miss.

The Lenox Hotel also includes Museum tickets in certain packages.

There is a great list on the Boston Children’s Museum Website with a list of Boston hotel packages that also include tickets to the Children’s Museum. The participating hotels include The Four Seasons, the InterContinential Hotel, the Liberty Hotel, the Seaport Hotel, the Park Plaza and the Ritz Carlton.

The Omni Parker Hotel has several kid-friendly packages either for the Duck Tours, the New England Aquarium or the Freedom Trail. Includes breakfast, milk and cookies, respective tickets and more.

The Marriot Boston Copley Place has deals just for February school vacation week where kids eat free, or you can get one room and get an adjoining room free.

So while it may not be a week long cruise or an all-inclusive stay at a tropical resort, these Boston Hotel Packages are a great and fun options for the whole family. Bon-Boston voyage!

Wanted: One Plunk-a-Doodle Monkey

Have you seen this Monkey?

Animal Adventure PlunkaDoodle Monkey

We are in desperate need to find him.

My toddler has fallen in love with “Monkey” (Otherwise pronounced ‘Menkey’ in toddler-ease.) Nanna (my Mom) had given Menkey to my son a few months ago after finding it at a HomeGoods store. The problem is, we don’t have backup. Menkey is on his last Monkey legs and I cannot find it anywhere.

While most parenting sites will suggest buying a back-up lovely or animal (because of this very issue) the problem lies in its theory. For the past two years, I have bought a variety of stuffed animals, which now qualifies my home as a local zoo or a personal-pet hotel. Lions, Bears, Lambs, Bunnies. You name it. His love affair was short-lived with those creatures. Maximum of 48 hours with the occasional follow-up date. Until ‘Menkey’.

Turns out this was the real deal.

Now we are stuck.

I have searched the internet high and low. Couple of sketchy E-bay listings and nothing else. I even sent a lovely email to the company, Animal Adventure, with picture of my son holding his Monkey, sleeping with Monkey and giving Monkey various kisses.

Dear Animal Adventure:

I am sure you get this email request a lot! But I am currently looking to see where your Plunk-a-doodle Monkey is currently stocked. It is our son’s favorite stuffed animal and we are looking for another. We have not been able to find one online or in a store. It appears that ToysRUs briefly sold it a month ago, but it is not currently a product offered. We sincerely would appreciate the help as it is a product he (and we) love. The Monkey is often in every picture we take!
Warm Regards,
Charlene

Their response?

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in Animal Adventure and our collections of high-quality, original plush and pet toys.

Animal Adventure is a business-to-business toy manufacturer, supporting a broad range of regional, national and international retailers who carry pet toys, plush toys and accessories. Our products may be purchased directly from these partners.

We cannot sell product directly to consumers nor do we inventory any of our product collections, so the purchasing retailers must be contacted for any and all product requests, including replacement.

We are unable to identify specific toy retailers and locations and we cannot guarantee that a particular retailer currently carries a specific product. However, we have provided a list of retailers that have purchased Animal Adventure products at http://animaladventure.com/our-retail-partners.html. You may contact them directly in an effort to locate a specific Animal Adventure product in your area.

As you can see, they didn’t want to help. I am shocked that they don’t know which retail partner recently placed an order for said Plunk-a-Doodle Monkey. Oh, and their list of retail partners? Huge. Supposedly I am supposed to call every BJs, every ToysRUs, every HomeGoods, etc. to find the one store that carries it. If they do at all. (And I just may start dialing.)

But here is one last motherly plea: Have you seen this monkey?

Reward: One happy two-year old.

Making Math Fun

Basic Math EquationIt is a worry of mine that my children will struggle as I did with arithmetic, geometry, and algebra. Yet, a lot of the struggles can be avoided with a few points to consider.

At a Math is Fun event hosted by Dads Do Good and sponsored by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (a Boston-based company), I listened to a panel of math experts, who shared their strategies for making math fun.

First, don’t panic. Just because you don’t know algebra doesn’t mean it is a hopeless cause. Be calm and your kids will pick up on your enthusiasm (and not your own dread.)

Second, be involved. While it is natural to shy away from things we don’t understand and don’t enjoy, be involved with your child’s math curriculum and their teacher. Ask questions and get lesson plans.

Third, make it fun. There are a variety of online games and tablet apps. While they are not a substitution, they are a great enhancement to reinforce, renew or challenge at a variety of math levels.

Fourth, think outside the box. Use everyday activities to incorporate math. Do you like to watch the TV show Deal or No Deal? Learn about probabilities!

While society can do a lot more to make math interesting, fun and fabulous, it can start a home. No matter at what age.

These were some apps and websites that the panel recommended for parents and kids alike. Hopefully one is right for you!

  • BrainPop - Subscription based online educational website for a variety of subjects, including Math.
  • ABCya - Free online educational kids computer games and activities for kids in pre-K through grade 5.
  • The Learning Company – an online website where you can print out math workbooks.
  • Number Stax – App for the iPad and iPhone teaching valuable math fundamentals and algebra practice for children 12+.
  • HMH Fuse – App for the iPad with a full length curriculum for Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry.
  • Singapore Math, Bar Models – a method to help kids grades 2-5 master problem solving skills.
  • Carmen Sandiego Adventures in Math – a new Wii game where kids can interact with math content to solve clues.

Mom Pressures

Mommy_walking_babyLast week, there were two posts by other Bloggers that really resonated with me, and I wanted to pass them along.

The first post was from a Mom of nine children to a Mom of one child. I saw it tweeted and retweeted on Twitter. The writer mentioned when she tells people she is the mother to nine children, other mothers were astonished on how she can handle so many children since they find it hard to be a mother to one. (That would be something I would say!) But her response was amazing and really touched a point within me. I have written before about my struggle transitioning to motherhood and I have always felt very guilty about it. But this writer gave a perspective that provide me with a better understanding that it may be normal to feel that way.

You can read the full post here. It is called: “To the Mother With Only One Child”.

The next post that struck a cord with me was about the pressure of trying to be a happy Mom. We have all had someone mention it….”Enjoy every moment because this time goes by so fast.” Or “You must love being a Mom!” Or the nasty comments where someone criticizes the fact that you aren’t glowing in your “Momdom”. When someone mentions we should love every moment (as our child is screaming in the background or painting the walls with spaghetti sauce) we wonder why we aren’t happy. And get stressed, thinking, “OMG, I should be happy and I am not! What’s wrong with me!”

Her post was about how the concept of Carpe Diem (living in the moment) really does not relate to Mom life when you are counting down the hours to bedtime, why that is okay, and what we can be ‘diem-ing’ instead. You can read the post called, “Don’t Carpe Diem” here.

So if you are a happy Mom or a Mom who has it figured out, rock on. Otherwise, rock on over to these two posts. Maybe it will provide you with some comfort that you are not alone.

Pregnancy Symptoms

Pregnancy BellyDealing with pregnancy myths is one thing, dealing with pregnancy symptoms is another.

You know those times when you wake up and wonder where the heck you are? Why you are wearing one sock, a hat and nothing else?

For those of you that have experienced that, you must have had some great college years. I can only blame it on my pregnancy.

The hot flashes, which explains the no clothes. The cold flashes, which I guess explains the one sock and hat. The itchy skin, the nose bleeds, the dry mouth one minute and the drool the next, or the nausea one minute and the binge eating the other. I finally realized that many of these symptoms was like the aftermath of a raging party. Sadly, the only party that one is having in this house right now is the baby I am currently pregnant with and whom is currently kicking me in my bladder. (I’m a little nervous that the smell of pee may not be a figment of my imagination.)

Recently on Twitter, my Metrowest Mamas Facebook page, and my Charlene Chronicles Facebook page, I asked many of you what pregnancy symptoms do you remember the most? Here’s what you many of you stated: vomiting, bed rest, need for naps, bladder kicks, irritable uterus, kicked ribs, pinched nerves, gum bleeds, sleepless nights, people commenting on your size, fatigue, mood swings, and many more!

Fun times, right?

Oh, but if you haven’t been pregnant before, don’t worry. About 99% of us would say it is all worth it. The other 1% just can’t be reached for comment.

If you didn’t get to weigh in before, do share all the lovely symptoms that you didn’t see coming in your past (or current) pregnancy. Misery loves company and it will make it seem more like a raging party after all.

Pregnancy Myths

Pregnancy BellyWhen you’re pregnant, there are a lot of pregnancy symptoms, but it amazes me the misinformation people wish to impart on you.

Case in point, my Mom has ‘baby-brain’ these days, as my sister-in-law and I are both expecting. My Mom has two best friends who have daughter-in-laws that are expecting as well. Turns out most of us are due all around the same time, which makes it worse, since comparisons are flying.

Here is one conversation I had with my Mom about my pregnancy and her friend’s daughter-in-law’s pregnancy.
Mom: You must be having a boy.
Me: Why is that?
Mom: Because she is only two weeks behind you and she is not even showing yet, while you have really popped out.
Me: Isn’t this her first pregnancy?
Mom: What does that have to do with it?
Me: Mom, after you have one baby, your abdominal muscles aren’t as tight and you typically show much earlier the second time around.
Mom: Well, that doesn’t make sense.

Here is another conversation:
Mom: You obviously are having a boy.
Me: Why do you say that?
Mom: Because you are really sticking out. And that is how you know it is a boy.
Me: Didn’t you say that Mrs. C said her daughter-in-law is carrying all over and you think that is the sign of a girl?
Mom: Yes.
Me: But she is having a boy.

At this point, I wish I knew I was having a girl so I could prove her wrong. Seriously, you’d think these women who have had 7 children and an existing 6 grandchildren amongst themselves, that they would be a bit more informed with these wives tales.

Of course, I get other strangers imparting their thoughts on my pregnancy. Which, of course, always starts of with: ”Congratulations!” Followed by, “When are you due?” Further followed by,”Do you know what you are having?” I’m really tempted to say I’m having an alien baby and they don’t have a gender…just to see what they say. Often, these strangers then proceed to tell you what they think you are having. I was told at a Starbucks recently that I was carrying a girl because I was carrying high. (Note that during my last pregnancy, another woman, coincidentally at another Starbucks, said I was carrying low and that it must be a girl.)
Then you have the people that state, “Wow, you must be due any day now?” When, I have to respond, “I am only 5 months along, so I would hope I would have more time.”

Pregnancy, in and of itself, is not easy. Then you leave the house and deal with all of this. Which is why I often don’t leave it.

So what crazy things have been said to you during your pregnancies?
