Tooth Fairy Kids Club

In preparation for my MAM Baby party, I learned a lot about teeth, oral products, and educational resources to help parents (and kids) establish good oral hygiene.

America's ToothFairy LogoIf you read my post-party blog post, I had mentioned the program called the America’s ToothFairy Kids Club by the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF), and I wanted to share more details about it here.

First, let me say that I’m not just being an over zealous Mom. It is a fact that tooth decay is the #1 chronic childhood disease, even though it is treatable, curable, and preventable through basic education and proper oral hygiene practices. (See HealthyChildren.org for ideas, like preventing bottle mouth.) While it is not so much an issue of access to dental care, rather than just at-home good oral hygiene, the NCOHF is still dedicated to delivering comprehensive oral healthcare for underserved children. A local effort I was a part of when I worked in health care too.

As a Mom, my efforts are now at home with my 2.5 year old, and the America’s ToothFairy Kids Club is such a huge help. The Kids Club sends out personalized letters from the Tooth Fairy herself, as well as quarterly fun, educational activities! It is free to sign-up, but many provide a donation to keep this effort going and to help the NCOHF to serve vulnerable populations.

tooth fairy 2Check out this quick video (45 seconds) with Larry the Cable Guy from the movie Tooth Fairy 2 to learn more about it. For example, I didn’t realize with my first child that I really should start “brushing” as early as one month old as it’s important to clean the gums too. Plus, if you wait until all your child’s teeth are in, you’ve missed the opportunity to establish a consistent routine and the constant sensation of brushing.

I hope you’ll check out the website, but if you sign up for the America’s Tooth Fairy Kids Club, a company called Xlear, Inc. (a manufacturer of all-natural, health-enhancing products) is providing one of you a DVD copy of the all-new Tooth Fairy 2 movie, as well as a selection from their oral care product line. So just use the form below to enter.

Remember to brush your teeth too (and make sure your kids see you do it.) Often, the simplest start is to set a good example!

Premama Prenatal Vitamin

There are a lot of indignities in being pregnant, as I have discussed here and here. But one of the things you have to do in pregnancy, that no one tells you about, is to take a prenatal vitamin that makes you want to gag.

They are the size of a small horse (only somewhat kidding) and/or leave a horrible aftertaste. I’m in my second pregnancy and I have been through many days of gulping down one of those bad boys. And it is not during pregnancy too. If you breastfeed, your doctor will still want to you take them. Thus, on last count, I have had to swallow 660 prenatal vitamins (and still counting.)

That total doesn’t include the DHA vitamins I take too, and if there is an alternative, I try it. Such as currently sneaking my son’s DHA gummy vitamins because I hate taking my own version.

When I was at a recent conference, I learned about a new pre-natal vitamin that is, for once, not a chewable or a pill. It is a prenatal vitamin drink mix, with DHA, called Premama. (The company is based in Rhode Island).

It is gluten-free, kosher, nut/egg/fish/sulfite free. It does have a trace of dairy and soy if that is a concern. You can mix with water, but since it is flavorless, I mix mine with orange juice in the morning. Any cold beverage will do. It looks like this.

Just tear open a packet and mix!

Since it has all of the ingredients a woman of child-bearing age (as they say) need, it is a great everyday vitamin alternative, but check with your doctor to make sure it contains everything you need before, during and post-pregnancy.

I got a free seven-day trial, but Premama is giving one of you a 30-day supply! So leave a comment below about your pregnancy, why you hate traditional prenatals, your favorite baby name – whatever – and one of you will be so much happier in the near future!

Good luck!

WonderWorld Toys

A lot of Moms (myself included) look to add a variety of eco-friendly, non-toxic, green toys to their kids’ toy repertoire.

Yet, without a standard for such toys, there is a little bit of ‘buyer beware’. Because you may do a search for ‘green toys’ on Amazon.com, and this will come up.

Kermit the Frog

Which is probably a bit too much of a literal interpretation…….

What you want to be looking for are for toys that are made from companies, and with materials, that are environmentally-friendly and kid-friendly.

Like this rattle (Spacy) from Wonderworld Toys.

Wondertoys

Wonderworld Toys’ packaging is at least 70% recycled materials and toys have non-toxic paint and no harmful plastics, if any plastic at all. They also operate with a social giving and fair trade mission.

Wonderworld Toys are also made from Rubber Trees, and for each tree they use, two get planted in place thereof. Like this toy (called the Wonder Fishing Game), also from Wonderworld Toys.

Wondertoys

So the next time you do a search for toys on the internet, make sure your search terms include companies like Wonder World Toys - and not terms that may result in this:

Missy Piggy and Kermit

And check out the entire Wonderworld Toy line, on their website or on sites like Amazon or YoYo, for fabulous toys from an environmentally-friendly and kid-friendly company. They even have a chart on their site that helps you pick toys based on age or pretend play vs. educational. Very easy to find something appropriate for a birthday party gift or a holiday present.

If you leave a comment below, one of you will win the Wonder Fishing Game featured above.

Wonder Fishing Game is not only loads of fun but educates children on color recognition as well as counting. Children use the wooden rod to hook the fish that match the color on the dice. Whoever hooks the most fish is the winner, and it is great for kids 3-4 years old. It’s made in Thailand from environmentally friendly rubberwood and strictly uses Non-Toxic Paints, Dyes and Lacquers, and Formaldehyde Free Glue. Packaging is made from at least 70% recycled paper too.

Needless to say, you’ll be hooked on the game….and the company too.

What to Get Mom for Mother’s Day

I was going to do a “Mother’s Day Gift Roundup”, or something similar. You know, provide suggestions on flowers, jewelry, pampering and more to give you ideas on what to get your wife or own Mother for Mother’s Day.

But if your Mom is anything like my Mom, save the receipt on that jewelry because she probably will want to return it. If you have siblings, it is also best to coordinate with them too, because if you all send flowers, her house may look like a funeral home. So I’m the first to always say – just get a SpaWeek gift card. There aren’t too many women who don’t like to get a massage or mani/pedi. It is a pretty safe bet.

But if you really want to give something different this year, and it’s for a Mom who has young children, then this is the gift to give. When I saw it, I knew that I wasn’t going to do a Mother’s Day Roundup because you only need this.

So I hope you watched the video because one of you will win all of the Hallmark items featured above. Just use the form to enter! Good luck!
